York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution and a number of community organizations have formed a partnership to help Hackleburg, Alabama recover from a devastating April 27 tornado that destroyed virtually all of the high school and youth sports and recreation equipment and programs in the town. The storm - one of dozens that hit Alabama that day - scored a direct hit on the K-12 school campus of the 1,600-person community.

The Revs learned of the project from New Freedom resident Wendy Yarbrough, a native of Ashland, Alabama, who started a grass-roots movement in York County to help the town. Yarbrough has also recruited Penn State-York, The YMCA of York and York County, the Bob Hoffman Foundation, the University of Alabama Alumni Association, the York/Adams Red Cross and other community organizations to chip-in.

For their part, the Revs are holding a drive to collect monetary donations and/or gently-used or new sports equipment such as baseball/softball gloves, baseball and softball bats, batting gloves, athletic balls of any sort, jump ropes, gym mats, hula hoops, cones, badminton equipment, flag football flags/belts and sidewalk chalk. Fans that bring such items to the York Revolution game at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Monday, June 27 will be admitted free to that night's game. The Revs are not setting a minimum donation for the free entry. "We're confident that our fans will do the right thing and be very generous," said Revolution President Eric Menzer.

Menzer said the Revolution was attracted to the idea of focusing their energy on one town, and the local connection to Yarbrough. "We liked the idea of trying to make a big difference in one place," he said. Menzer also said that meeting Yarbrough and seeing her personal commitment to the project, and the number of other organizations involved, convinced the team to get on board."

The game on June 27 is an addition to the Revolution's schedule, resulting from a rained-out game earlier in the season on May 19. The game time is 6:30 p.m.; gates will open at 5:30 and the collection will take place beginning at that time on Brooks Robinson Plaza in front of the stadium.
