Frederick, MD - Anthony Ranaudo peppered the strike zone over six innings in his Carolina League debut, but yielded four runs on eight hits and suffered the loss in Frederick's 4-2 victory on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Keys starter Ryohei Tanaka set the pace in his six superb innings, allowing just one unearned run en route to improving his perfect record to 3-0. Salem mustered seven hits, but none for extra bases, and the Sox stranded eight on base, falling one game below .500 to 26-27 on the season.

Ranaudo showed solid command, tossing 59 of his 81 pitches for strikes, but the Keys scratched him for three runs in the first two innings. Steve Bumbry scored for Frederick in the first after leading off with a double, coming across on a grounder to third that was booted by Kolbrin Vitek. Another Vitek error helped the Keys put runners at the corners with one out, but Ranaudo picked up his first Carolina strikeout-getting Tyler Kolodny to swing and miss-before inducing a pop to left to end the inning.

The Keys delivered three more singles in the second, and although none of them were particularly well hit, Frederick plated two more runs. Bumbry finished 3-4 with an RBI, singling to score Brian Ward in the second inning. Garabez Rosa also touched home plate safely on Bobby Steven's ground-out.

Salem broke through with a two-out RBI single from Zach Gentile in the top of the third, but the offense was fairly dormant for the majority of the ballgame. The Sox only put multiple runners on base once, in the eighth inning when the Sox scored one and loaded the bases with two outs, trailing 4-2. Unfortunately, Keys reliever Clay Shrader induced a David Mailman ground-out and the Sox squandered the opportunity. Shrader then struck out the side in the ninth to secure the Frederick victory, picking up his first Carolina League save.

Ranaudo struck out five and walked one in six innings, yielding eight hits and four runs. The only run he surrendered after the second came on Tyler Townsend's solo homer to center in the fifth. Meanwhile, Tanaka allowed just five hits and one unearned run in six frames, striking out four without walking anyone.

Derrick Gibson was the only member of the Sox to finish with multiple hits, going 2-4 from the bottom of the Salem lineup. In relief of Ranaudo, Tom Ebert tossed two scoreless innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced.

On Saturday, the Red Sox and Keys reunite at Harry Grove Stadium for the middle matchup of their three-game weekend set. Chris Hernandez is scheduled to start for Salem opposite Frederick's Oliver Drake, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00.
