Pressly Deals for Six, Sox Prevail 3-2

June 2, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Lynchburg, VA (June 2, 2011)- Ryan Pressly returned to his early season form, tossing six impressive innings in a 3-2 Salem victory over Lynchburg on Thursday night at City Stadium. The Texas native won for the first time since April 30, snapping a personal four-game losing streak.

After a tough, winless May, Pressly worked his way around five hits and surrendered just one run to the potent Hillcat lineup that entered the day leading the Carolina League in hitting. Pressly retired eight of the first nine he faced, with the lone batter reaching via a two-out walk in the first. The 21-year-old ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth, ceding a two-out RBI single to Andrelton Simmons. However, with two outs and runners on second and third, Pressly induced a harmless groundout to escape the frame. With the win, Pressly evened his record at 4-4 and lowered his ERA from 4.75 to 4.34 in the process.

In relief, Michael Gleason made his first Carolina League appearance and rolled through two and two-thirds innings before running into trouble in the last of the ninth. With two gone, Braeden Schlehuber doubled off the wall and came home on an RBI single by L.V. Ware. Gleason was able to strand the tying run on base, as Todd Cunningham flew out to the warning track in center field to end the game. Called up earlier in the day, Gleason picked up his third save of the season combined between Greenville and Salem.

Salem got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Lynchburg starter Zeke Spruill yielded a one-out single to Zach Gentile and plunked Dan Butler for the second time in two plate appearances. Reynaldo Rodriguez made Spruill pay, lacing an RBI double to left-center to put the Sox up 1-0. Mark Wagner brought home another run with a sac fly to double Salem's lead.

After seeing the lead cut in half in the bottom of the fifth, the Sox regained the two-run advantage with an unearned run in the top of the sixth. With two gone, Shannon Wilkerson looped a sinking liner that left fielder Gerry Rodriguez misplayed, allowing Wilkerson to advance to second on the error. David Mailman took advantage of the blunder, roping a two-bagger off the right field wall to drive home Wilkerson to put the Sox up 3-1.

Spruill went seven for Lynchburg, but ended up on the wrong side of the decision, despite allowing just two earned runs on six hits. Blaine Sims retired six of the seven batters he faced over the final two innings to keep the Sox at bay.

Michael Almanzar was the lone Salem player to record multiple hits, slapping singles in his first two plate appearances for his seventh multi-hit game of the season. Rodriguez' RBI double marked the fourth straight game in which the Colombian first baseman recorded a double. In the process, Rodriguez reached base for the 18th consecutive road game, the longest streak of its kind in the Carolina League this season.

After splitting the four-game series with Lynchburg, the Salem Sox continue their 19-game, 18-day odyssey with the first of three against Frederick on Friday night. Anthony Ranaudo will make his Carolina League debut after going 4-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 10 starts for Low-A Greenville. The Keys will send Ryohei Tanaka to counter Ranaudo with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM from Harry Grove Stadium.
