Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The inaugural Little League Hit, Run, and Throw Competition finals will be held at Hadlock Field on Tuesday, June 7th at 5:45 PM prior to that evening's 7:00 PM Sea Dogs' game versus the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants).
The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, partnered with Mercy Hospital and Dunkin' Donuts to host the First Annual Little League Hit, Run, and Throw Competition. Seven local Little Leagues took part in the event with preliminary competitions held at each Little League throughout April and May.
The following Little Leagues will be represented by two finalists from each of the three age groups (7-8, 9-10, and 11-12), Falmouth, Gorham, Portland, Standish, Westbrook, Windham, and Yarmouth. The top two Little Leaguers from each age group have been selected to participate in the Finals against the representatives from the other local Little Leagues on June 7th at Hadlock Field
Players have been evaluated in hitting; getting three good swings each of a tee. For every 25 feet the ball travels, the player has been awarded 10 points.
Running has been evaluated by each Little Leaguer being timed running from second base to home plate. The fastest time is awarded 25 points, second place 24 points, etc.
Finally, the throwing has been evaluated by each child receiving three throws from the outfield grass to a net at home plate. Each time the Little Leaguer hits the net, they are awarded 10 points.
Scoring for the Finals on June 7th at Hadlock Field will be the same. Among the prizes, the winner of each age group will receive are a pair of Boston Red Sox tickets and a Portland Sea Dogs jersey. Fans are encouraged to come out and support your town and local Little Leaguers.
