St. Paul Saints News Release

AMARILLO, TX (May 30, 2011) - Apparently everything is bigger in Texas including margins of defeat as the St. Paul Saints lost by their widest margin of the season 14-6 to the Amarillo Sox Monday night at Potter County Memorial Stadium ending their five game winning streak.

The Saints were never in the game as the Sox scored the first five runs of the game and led it 14-1 at one point before the Saints scored five runs over the final two innings.

Saints starter Alain Quijano had a tough night and it started in the second inning. Lee Cruz led off with a single and Benji Johnson doubled to left putting runners at second and third. Van Pope followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0. With two outs Jason White, the number nine hitter drove in a run with a single to make it 2-0. White would finish the night 3-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

The Sox scored three more in the third with the aid of just one hit. Matt Tucker led off with a walk and Cyle Hackerd doubled him to third. After an intentional walk to Cruz loaded the bases, Quijano walked Johnson and Pope to force in two runs and make it 4-0. A double play ground out plated the fifth. Quijano went 5.0 innings allowing 10 runs (nine earned), while walking two and striking out two.

All nine starters scored at least a run for the Sox with four different players scoring two.

The Saints offense did put up 14 hits, but could never get to Sox starter Matt Elliott who entered play with an ERA of 9.00. He allowed just one run on seven hits while walking one and striking out a career high 10.

The Saints got on the board in the fourth when Jason Cooper doubled and Brandon Tripp singled him in. Tripp extended his hitting streak to eight and now has an RBI in six straight.

The Saints scored four in the eighth when Cooper singled and Tripp crushed a two-run homer to right, his fourth of the season. Tripp finished the night 2-5 with three RBI and two runs scored and had a chance in the ninth to extend his three hits a game to give, but reached on an error in the ninth. The only other drama in the ninth for the Saints was whether Cooper could hit for the cycle, but he lined out softly to second. He finished the night a homer shy of the cycle going 3-5 with two runs scored. Adam Frost added an RBI single, he finished the night 3-4 with a double, RBI and two stolen bases, and an RBI fielder's choice by Justin Snyder.

The same two teams meet Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Kyle Zaleski (1-0, 0.00) to the mound against Sox RHP Justin Garcia (1-1, 6.06). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
