Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - Four Savannah pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout Monday night to push the Gnats past the Greenville Drive 1-0 at Historic Grayson Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,033. The first place Gnats (22-22) took three of four games from the Drive (21-24).
Savannah starter Chase Huchingson held the Drive in check for the first five innings, striking out seven. He allowed the Drive's only two hits of the night, a pair of singles in the fifth inning, when the Drive loaded the bases with one out in a scoreless game. However, Huchingson escaped trouble by striking out the next two batters, both looking, to keep the Drive off the scoreboard.
The Gnats scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fifth. C Albert Cordero doubled to open the inning. 1B Joe Bonfe followed with a pretty bunt that Drive 3B David Renfroe charged and fielded. Renfroe's wild throw to first skipped past 1B Drew Hedman allowing Cordero to score from second. Bonfe earned a hit on the play and finished 2-for-3.
Erik Goeddel relieved Huchingson in the sixth, and fired three hitless innings with three strikeouts. The Gnats turned to Gabriel Zavala to begin the ninth, and lefty Hamilton Bennett picked up the final two outs for his first save of the year.
Robbie Shields was 0-for-4, snapping his 12-game hitting streak. RF Cory Vaughn finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a walk.
The Gnats enjoy an off-day Tuesday and begin a four-game series in Augusta Wednesday. RHP Gonzalez Germen (3-1, 3.68) will take the ball for Savannah Wednesday against LHP Gaspar Santiago (0-0, 3.32) for the GreenJackets.
