Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITY (May 20, 2011) - The Salt Lake Bees, in conjunction with the Utah State Office of Education, will host Prevention Dimensions Day at the Bees vs. Memphis Redbirds game on Tuesday, May 24 at 10:35 a.m. The Bees will welcome a record amount of students to this eighth annual event at Spring Mobile Ballpark which promotes drug and alcohol prevention.
The fourth, fifth and sixth grade students in attendance will enjoy an opening ceremony featuring more than 500 Utah elementary students. Governor Gary Herbert will officially declare May 24 as "Prevention Dimensions Day" in Utah and will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Other featured attendees and participants include Utah's First Lady, Jeanette Herbert, Governor Herbert's Education Director Christine Kearl, Verne Larsen from the Utah State Office of Education, Utah's PTA President Ilene Mechum, Ashly Costa from ABC's Dancing with the Stars, Olympic Gold Medalist Jimmy Shea, and American Idol finalist Carmen Rasmusen Herbert. The Bees will also provide lunch for each student.
In addition, the Bees are teaming up with the Utah Food Bank in an effort to promote service through the Prevention Dimensions curriculum while encouraging students to donate a canned food item upon entry.
Prior to Prevention Dimensions Day, Mrs. Herbert will announce her initiative "Uplift Utah Families." The mission of "Uplift Utah Families" is to assist parents in gaining access to programs and information that will help them acquire the skills necessary to raise loving, responsible children.
Prevention Dimensions (PD) is a set of Utah's Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities resource lessons which support the Utah State Office of Education pre-kindergarten through 12th grade health core. The program began in 1982 as a joint effort between the Utah State Division of Substance Abuse, Utah State Department of Health, Utah State Office of Education, and Utah PTA, and has been revised several times since. Prevention Dimensions is recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as one of the nation's exemplary programs. The mission of PD is to give students a strong foundation of effective violence and substance abuse prevention skills.
