Zephyrs Beat Fresno, 2-0, To Level Series

FRESNO- Shane Loux has made an unpleasant habit of pitching on nights when his teammates fail to light up the scoreboard. He was the victim of poor run support once again on Friday night, as the Grizzlies suffered their first home shutout of the season, a 2-0 setback to the New Orleans Zephyrs at Chukchansi Park.

Loux (2-5) allowed two runs on six hits over 7.0 innings of work, but took the loss. He lowered his ERA to 3.61 in the process, but fell for the fourth time when delivering a quality start. The Fresno offense has scored more than three runs just twice in Loux's nine starts so far in 2011.

The Zephyrs (23-19) took no time getting on the board, as Bryan Peterson blasted the third pitch he saw from Loux into the right field seats to put New Orleans ahead 1-0.

The game remained that way until the top of the sixth. With two outs, Josh Kroeger blooped a double just inside the left field foul line, and Matt Dominguez followed with a broken-bat floater just out of the reach of Ryan Rohlinger's leap at shortstop to score the second run of the game.

Fresno (20-22) could get nothing going against Zephyrs spot-starter Todd Doolittle, who was replacing PCL ERA leader Jay Buente. Doolittle (2-0) held the Grizzlies to just two hits through his first five innings of work, then surrendered a hit to Loux and a walk to Tyler Graham to open the sixth before being lifted. Garrett Parcell came on and got Ryan Rohlinger to fly out and Brandon Belt to ground out, putting runners at second and third with two away. Brett Pill then blooped a ball into no-man's-land in shallow right, but second baseman Joe Thurston made a fantastic, over-the-shoulder catch to help the Zephyrs escape the threat.

The Grizzlies could not get a man past second base after that, finishing 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranding six on the evening. Jose Ceda stranded Brett Pill at second base to end the game, notching his league-leading 12th save with a scoreless ninth.

These two teams will meet again for the third game in this four-game set at 7:05pm Saturday night with Zephyrs righty Tom Koehler (4-0) taking on Grizzlies southpaw Matt Yourkin (3-3).
