Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (May 13, 2011) - Winston-Salem scored four times with two outs in the top of the first, taking a lead that would never be threatened on a foggy Friday night in the Roanoke Valley. The Dash blanked the Red Sox 5-0 behind lefthander Hector Santiago, who allowed just one hit in six scoreless innings. The Winston southpaw struck out six and walked two before giving way to a pair of relievers, Addison Reed and Taylor Thompson, who teamed up to retire the final nine batters of the ballgame in order. Salem's lone hit belonged to second-baseman James Kang, a one-out single in the sixth. Ironically, Kang was hitless in seven Carolina League at-bats before his sinking liner to left helped the Red Sox avoid getting no-hit by the Dash.

Almost all of Winston's offense arrived with two outs in the first inning. Salem starter Drake Britton retired the first two batters of the game, but six Dash hitters reached consecutively after that. Two walks and a single from Ian Gac loaded the bases for Jake Oester, who singled to left to plate a pair and give Winston a 2-0 lead. Jason Bour reached on Kolbrin Vitek's fielding error to reload the bases, and Kyle Colligan made the Sox pay for the mistake with another two-run single, giving the Dash a 4-0 edge before the Sox had a chance to swing.

When Salem did get a chance, the opportunities quickly came and went. The Red Sox went 1-2-3 in six of the nine innings, with only a pair of walks drawn by Matt Spring and Reynaldo Rodriguez and Kang's single halting the steamrolling of Salem's offense. After Kang's base hit, the Dash arms set down the final 11 batters of the ballgame to procure the shutout. Friday became the second time in 2011 that Salem was held scoreless in a ballgame.

Gac blasted a solo homer in the fifth off reliever Will Latimer to give the Dash a 5-0 advantage, but that was all Winston mustered off the Salem bullpen. Latimer tossed four innings, allowing just the one run, while Anatanaer Batista held the Dash scoreless in a pair of frames late. Winston loaded the bases with one out against Batista in the ninth, but the Salem righty struck out Jared Mitchel and Gac to keep the deficit at five.

Since Myrtle Beach lost its series opener against Lynchburg, the Salem Sox remain in first place in the Southern Division. At 21-11, the Sox are one game in front of the Pelicans, who sit at 21-13.

Salem and Winston will square off in the middle matchup of their three-game series on Saturday night at 6:05. Righthander Chris Balcom-Miller is set to return from a stint on the disabled list to make his fifth start of the season opposite Dash righthander Cameron Bayne.
