Sea Dogs' Offense Leaves the Mets in the Fog
April 27, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs (7-9) collected a 9-4 win over the Binghamton Mets (6-10) in a fog shortened game Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. The game was delayed for 32 minutes by fog before the game was called after 6 1/2 innings of play. The win marked the first time this season that the Sea Dogs have collected back-to-back wins and crawled out of the basement in the Eastern League's Northern Division.
The Sea Dogs entered the game as the top hitting team in the Eastern League with a .285 team average and they continued their assault on Eastern League pitchers Wednesday evening collecting 11 hits and nine runs.
The Portland offense struck early with three runs in the second highlighted by a Chih-Hsien Chiang two run double. Chiang would lead the Portland offense with a 3-for-4 performance scoring two runs and driving-in three.
In the third inning, the Sea Dogs exploded for a season high six run inning and batted around for the first time this season. Chiang came to the plate with bases loaded and delivered an infield single picking-up his third RBI of the game. Jon Hee was hit-by-a-pitch forcing home Will Middlebrooks. Che-Hsuan Lin had the big blow a two run double. Alex Hassan and Tim Federowicz each chipped-in with RBI singles.
The only thing that seemed to slow down the Portland offense was the fog. It was the first time in the franchise's 18 seasons that a game had to be called due to fog and just the second time fog delayed a game, the last coming in July of 1994.
For the second night in a row, the Sea Dogs received outstanding starting pitching as Brock Huntzinger (2-2) earned his second consecutive win tossing five innings holding the Mets to two runs, none earned, on four hits.
Binghamton starter Brad Holt (0-1) suffered the loss; he was knocked out in the third inning after Chiang's infield single deflected off his body. Holt allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits; he walked four and did not record a strikeout
The series will conclude with a special 12:00 Noon start Thursday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Sea dogs' right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson (2-1, 5.14) will get the start for the Sea Dogs. He will be opposed by Binghamton lefty Robert Carson (2-0, 0.90). The Sea Dogs are offering a "Lunch Break" special tomorrow encouraging fans to spend their lunch hour at the ballpark; $10 gets you a Reserved Seat ticket, a hot dog, soda, and Sea Dog biscuit. Senior citizens are also invited to "Walk the Park" after the game as seniors (62+) will be allowed to walk, stroll, or run the bases.
