Bakersfield Jam News Release
BAKERSFIELD, January 26, 2011 - The Toronto Raptors signed guard Trey Johnson, making him the sixth GATORADE Call-up of the 2010-11 NBA Development League season, the team announced today. Johnson becomes the first GATORADE Call-up for the Jam this season and the 5th in franchise history. "Trey has shown to have a good mid-range offensive game. With injuries to Leandro Barbosa and Linas Kleiza we are looking for Trey to give us some scoring punch off the bench. He has proven in his time in Bakersfield that he is capable of that," said Toronto Raptors Head Coach Jay Triano.
In 26 games (all starts) this season with the Jam, Johnson averaged 25.8 points, making him the NBA D-League leading scorer, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists. He also earned the NBA Development League Player of the Month honors for the games played in December and was named to the 2011 All-NBA D-League Showcase Third Team.
"I'm more than blessed right now. All I can do is thank God," said Trey Johnson. A two-year player out of Jackson State, this 6-6 guard participated in the training camp and played in five preseason games with the Los Angeles Lakers this pre-season, where he averaged 2.8 points and 1.2 assists in 8.8 minutes. Over the past three seasons, Johnson has split time between the Bakersfield Jam and international teams in France, Italy and Serbia. A 2009 D-League All-Star and All-D-League Second Team member, Johnson also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers under a 10-day contract in February of 2009.
"I am excited that Trey is getting an opportunity to show NBA teams how much he has improved since his last call-up. He has worked hard for this moment," the Bakersfield Jam Head Coach Will Voigt added.
Johnson will be available to play tonight when the team hosts the Philadelphia Sixers.
