Winterhawks Fly By T-Birds

Portland, OR - The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-1 Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

The T-Birds next home game is against the Winterhawks on Saturday, January 29, at ShoWare Center at 7:05pm. This game is the annual Fred Meyer Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are encouraged to throw teddy bears on the ice after the T-Birds score their first goal of the game.

The bears are collected by the WARM 106.9 FM Teddy Bear Patrol and given to local police and fire departments who give them to children in times of emergency and crisis. Portland (31-14-0-3) took a 1-0 lead at 6:41of the first period on a goal by Craig Cunningham. Taylor Aronson and Ty Rattie were credited with the assists.

The Winterhawks went in front 2-0 at 15:05 of the first on a power-play goal by Ryan Johansen. Joe Morrow and Brad Ross had assists on the goal.

Portland outshot Seattle 21-7 in the first period.

Cunningham scored off a rebound at 16:28 of the second period to make it a 3-0 Portland lead. William Wrenn and Rattie had the assists.

The Winterhawks led 33-22 in shots after two periods.

Portland extended their lead to 5-0 with goals at 3:05 and 4:20 of the third period. Taylor Peters had the first goal and Rattie scored the second goal of the period.

Marcel Noebels got the T-Birds (18-21-4-5) on the board when he scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 16:33 of the third. Noebels beat Portland goalie Keith Hamilton through his legs for his 17th goal of the season.

Portland outshot Seattle 49-34 in the game.

Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard made 44 saves on 49 shots and his record is now 18-19-3-5.

Hamilton stopped 33 of 34 shots and his record is now 8-3-0-1.

Before the Teddy Bear Toss game the T-Birds will travel to Everett on Friday, January 28, to face the Silvertips at 7:35pm at Comcast Arena.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2010-11 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
