D.C. United News Release

WASHINGTON, DC (September 14, 2010) - D.C. United and its non-profit arm, United for D.C., have begun the fall session of United Soccer Club, which will run for eight full weeks. In addition to practice sessions, United Soccer Club sites will participate in friendly matches, tournaments and a healthy lifestyles curriculum. United for D.C. and the U.S. Soccer Foundation work together to support their missions to promote youth soccer in economically disadvantaged urban communities.

Through its partnership with the D.C. Department of Recreation, the Boys & Girls Club, D.C. Public Schools, Montgomery County Recreation Department and Arlington Recreation Department, the fall session will kickoff at 12 sites: J.O. Wilson Elementary School in Ward 6; Clubhouse #14 in Ward 7; Parkview Recreation Center in Ward 1; Orr Elementary School, Boys and Girls Club, Friendship Charter Southeastern Elementary Academy, FBR at THEARC, Barry Farm Recreation Center and Ketcham Elementary School in Ward 8; Turkey Thicket Recreation Center in Ward 5; Harrison Recreation Center in Ward 3; Carver Community Center in Arlington VA and Longbranch Community Center in Montgomery County, MD.

The fall practice season includes two weekly after school sessions at each site. Over the course of the program, each team will travel to other sites to play friendly matches in a seven vs. seven format. United Soccer Club will also hold a season-ending tournament following the eight weeks of practice at RFK Stadium's Auxiliary Field.

United Soccer Club was born from a request in Ward 8 for opportunities for children to play organized soccer. In the spring of 2006, United for D.C. launched its own after school soccer program, in partnership with D.C. Parks and Recreation at Barry Farm Recreation Center.

United Soccer Club is in the running to receive a $50,000 grant through the Pepsi Refresh Project. D.C. United defender Devin McTavish is competing against players from all other 15 clubs in Major League Soccer to earn the most fan votes to win the Pepsi Refresh grant to fund community activities. Fans are able to vote by visiting www.mlssoccer.com/PepsiRefresh/DC . Additionally, United Soccer Club coach Judah Cooks has been nominated by the U.S. Soccer Foundation for the Up2Us Play it Forward Coach of the Year Award.

United Soccer Club is one of the many community outreach ventures of United for D.C. Through the Kicks for Kids program, thousands of underprivileged children will have an opportunity to watch United play this season alone. United Reads, currently presented in six DC elementary schools, distributed nearly 8,000 books during player visits to classrooms throughout the spring.
