Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, CA - The Sacramento River Cats clinched the Pacific Coast League (PCL) Pacific Conference Southern Division on Friday night with the team's 12-8 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Security Service Field. This marks the fourth consecutive Division Title won by the River Cats. Overall the franchise has won a remarkable nine Division titles in 11 season and four Pacific Coast League Championships.
The River Cats are the first team in major American professional sports (MLB, NHL, NBA and NFL) to win nine division championships this century. That includes Triple-A and Double-A baseball, but excludes Single-A and some Double-A leagues that break their seasons into two halves. The New York Yankees (MLB) and Detroit Red Wings (NHL) have eight titles since 2000.
Sacramento trailed the Fresno Grizzlies by 12.5 games in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division standings in mid-June before going on an extraordinary climb up the standings. The comeback culminated in a five-game series at Raley Field against the Grizzlies from August 25-29, when Sacramento took four of five games to take a 1.0-game lead in the standings.
If the season ended today the River Cats first round opponent would be the Tacoma Rainiers (Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners), who lead the Pacific Conference North Division. Regardless of opponent, the River Cats will host games 1 and 2 (Sept. 8 and 9) of the best-of-five Pacific Conference Championship Series at Raley Field.
Playoff tickets are on sale at the Raley Field Ticket Office, rivercats.com and Ticketmaster. Individual game tickets are available as well as full Playoff strips, which provide the best value.
