Iowa Cubs News Release

Iowa outfielder Brad Snyder launched his 25th home run of the season to break a 2-2 tie as the Cubs went on to defeat Memphis 4-2, Friday night at Principal Park in front of 9,106 fans.

With the win, Iowa moves up one game on Memphis in the division and can clinch the pennant with at least two wins in the final three games against the Redbirds. Omaha, who suffered a loss to Oklahoma City, 3-1, was eliminated from playoff contention.

Iowa got on the board first early in the first inning. Iowa hit three singles, all through the hole in between third base and shortstop, and the third hit, by Jason Dubois, scored Jim Adduci who raced from second to home and beat the throw from the outfield to put Iowa on top 1-0.

Cub starter Chris Carpenter limited the Redbirds to just a pair of singles through five shutout innings before running into trouble in the sixth.

With a man on first and one out, Allen Craig tripled to center to score Tyler Greene from first and knot the game at 1-1. Mark Hamilton followed with a sacrifice fly to score Craig and give Memphis its only lead of the game at 2-1.

Carpenter pitched his best game of his young triple-A career, giving Iowa a quality start. The young right-hander pitched six strong innings, only giving up two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out five, earning a no-decision.

Iowa didn't let the lead last for long, getting even in the home half of the sixth. After two quick outs, the Cubs rallied, loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single. Ty Wright batted for Carpenter and drew a walk to tie the game at 2-2.

Snyder belted his team-leading home run in the seventh and the Cubs added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.

Luke Sommer (1-0, 4.50) contributed two innings of scoreless relief for his first triple-A win and Jeff Stevens pitched the ninth for his 10th save of the season.

Matthew Scherer (4-2, 4.17) picked up the loss for Memphis in relief.

Iowa and Memphis square off in game two of the four-game set tomorrow night at Principal Park. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. and will see Redbird right-hander Lance Lynn (11-8, 3.24) battle I-Cub righty Mitch Atkins (7-3, 3.67).
