
Hurricanes Training Camp 2010 - Friday Update

Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release
Lethbridge, AB - Hurricanes Training Camp shifted into the fun part as the Hurricanes started two a days with all members of camp taking to the ice for practices and scrimmages. The veteran teams - C & D took to the ice in the morning for practice before Teams A & B, made up of 94 and 95-born players kicked off the scrimmages.
Game 1 - Team A vs. Team B
In the first game of the day, Team B - coached by veteran scouts Gerry Klinkhammer and Tim Lollar blasted their way to a 7-0 win over Team B coached by Scouts Gary Hanson and Greg Heakes. Team B was led to victory by Jaimen Yakubowski (2G), Mitch Guiel (1G,2A), Jamal Watson (1G,2A) and Lenny Hackman (1G,1A). Goaltenders Ryan Ferguson and Luke Lee-Knight combined for the shutout while the highlight of the game came with blue chip prospect Macoy Erkamps' goal as he took the puck to the slot off the half wall and roofed a shot for his first tally of Training Camp. Russell Maxwell, the brother of current Hurricanes overage Mitch Maxwell tallied the other Team B goal after being moved from Team A due to an injury. Teams A & B would meet again later in the day with the goaltenders switching sides. Scratched due to injury from scrimmage was forward and Hurricanes 2009 bantam draft pick Ryley Bennefield as well as local 94-born d-man Mark Eremenko. No word yet on when or if these players will return to action.

Game 2 - Team C vs. Team D
In the second game of the day, Teams C & D - the veterans took to the ice with Hurricanes Assistant Coach Chris Chisamore (Team C) and Associate Coach Matt Kabayama (Team D) at the helm. Team D was led to a 5-3 win after newcomer Brady Ramsay tallied a hat trick to lead his team to victory. Veteran Austin Fyten showed good chemistry with Ramsay notching a three point day (1G,2A) while another rookie Mitch Owsley had a two point day (1G,1A). Brennan Yadlowski (1G,1A), Michael Sofillas and Jordan Baillie tallied for Team C in a losing cause while Max Ross tallied a pair of assists.

Game 3 - Team A vs. Team B
The final game of the day went to Team A who bounced back with a 5-4 OT win on the strength of a OT winner by camp invite Zach Mantyka. Craig Leverton helped to lead a furious charge by Team A with a pair of goals with under five minutes to play in the third. Chris Thorimbert tallied two points (1G,1A) while U.S. born import Chris Stovall opened the scoring for Team A. Team B put in a strong performance as Mitch Guiel had yet another solid game with three points (1G,2A) while Russell Maxwell (1G,1A) and Luke Scheunert (2A) each had multi point efforts. Hurricanes 1st round pick Jay Merkley also scored for Team B in the loss. 95-born Jamal Watson, who also impressed was forced to leave the game with an injury in the second half.

Camp continues Saturday and Sunday as the 94s and 95s will be mixed in with the veterans as the Hurricanes hold the four team Training Camp Charity Intersquad
Tournament in support of the Lethbridge United Way. Fans are encouraged to drop by
Adams Ice Centre as games kick off at 9:00 AM Saturday morning and end with finals on Sunday. The United Way of Lethbridge will be on hand to take donations on entry for these two days. Please note that rosters for the newly formed Teams 1,2,3 and 4 will be available only at the arena and will be made available at the rink with any donation to the Lethbridge United Way. The Hurricanes encourage you - the fans to support this great cause.

- From Russia with Love: Alex Kuvaev, the Canes selection in the 2010 CHL Import draft will make his on ice debut Saturday after arriving in Lethbridge late Friday evening. Hailing from Moscow, Russia - Kuvaev is a 93-born - 6'3, 190 pound forward will be eligible for the 2011 NHL Draft. He played for Team Russia at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Timmins. ON this past winter and played this past season for Vityaz Chekhov of the Russian Minor Hockey League (MHL)
- Born in the U.S.A.: The Canes currently have a pair of U.S. born prospects attending camp, both of them 95-born forwards - Chris Stovall who hails from Grapevine, TX and Trent Dillinger who hails from Gillette, WY
- Sibling Rivalry: Cane Training Camp is currently playing host to three pairs of brothers current Hurricanes Mitch Maxwell, Brennan Yadlowski and Philip Tot have been joined on the camp rosters by their brothers Russell, Austin and David.
- Early Departure: After what was an impressive Training Camp - Hurricanes 1st round selection Jay Merkley has departed from camp as planned due to previous engagements with the Calgary Midget AAA Buffs tryouts.
