Harrisburg Senators News Release
The Trenton Thunder scored an unearned run with two outs in the eighth inning, and went on to beat the Harrisburg Senators on Saturday night at Metro Bank Park by a final score of 2-1. Â Despite the loss, the Senators (71-61) maintained their 1.5-game lead over Bowie in the playoff race, as the Baysox (70-63) dropped a 6-5 road decision to New Britain. Â The game at Metro Bank Park also had the distinction of drawing the largest crowd in Senators history, with a paid attendance of 7907.
Trenton (78-55) started its rally to score the winning run with two outs and nobody on base in the eighth inning, with reliever Rafael Martin (5-3) on the mound for the Senators. Â Austin Krum reached base on a roller up the first base line that Martin threw wide of Chris Marrero at first, and then moved to third base on a single by Austin Romine. Â Then came a passed ball by catcher Devin Ivany, and Krum came home to put the Thunder on top. Â That would prove to be the final run of the ballgame, as the Senators went down in order in the eighth and ninth.
The Thunder also struck first in the game, scoring a run in the sixth on back-to-back one-out hits by the top of their order. Â Justin Christian started the rally with a single, and then Krum drove him home with a triple. Â He was stranded at third base as two consecutive groundouts ended the inning. Â The Senators answered with a run in the seventh, on a single, a walk, and an error. Â Ofilio Castro notched the single, Brad Coon drew the walk, and Trenton first baseman Marcos Vechionacci committed the error on a possible double-play ball that could have ended the inning. Â The run was unearned against reliever John Van Benschoten of the Thunder.
Aaron Thompson turned in a great start for the Senators, as he allowed just one run--on the Krum triple--in seven innings. Â He gave up just five hits and a walk, and struck out five in the no-decision. Â Chris Marrero recorded a two-hit performance, and Castro, Ivany, and Coon each added one hit. Â Martin went two innings in relief, and gave up a hit and a run.
The final game of the four-game series between the teams is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Metro Bank Park, with LHP Tom Milone (11-5, 2.93) making the start for the Senators, against RHP Dellin Betances (0-0, 1.93) of Trenton. Â The game is the final regular season home game of the year for the Senators, and the first pitch is set for 2:00 PM. Â Radio coverage begins at 1:45 PM, on 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com.
