Valaika Becomes 46th Dragons Player to Reach Majors

Dayton, Ohio-Chris Valaika, a key member of the 2007 Dayton Dragons, made his Major League debut on Tuesday night with the Cincinnati Reds, becoming the 46th former Dragons player to play in the big leagues. Valaika was 1 for 2 for the Reds in San Francisco in his first Major League appearance.

Valaika (vuh-LAY-kuh) played in 79 games for the 2007 Dragons, batting .307 with 10 home runs and 56 runs batted in, while leading the team to a 24-5 record over their first 29 games and a first half Eastern Division championship.

Other former Dragons to reach the Major Leagues this season include pitchers Logan Ondrusek, Enerio Del Rosario, Jordan Smith, and Travis Wood and outfielder Chris Heisey (all with the Reds) and pitcher Marcos Mateo (with the Chicago Cubs).

There are 11 current members of the Reds who played for the Dragons. In addition to Valaika, they include pitchers Homer Bailey, Johnny Cueto, Logan Ondrusek, and Travis Wood; catcher Ryan Hanigan; infielders Paul Janish and Joey Votto; and outfielders Jay Bruce, Chris Heisey, and Drew Stubbs.
