Drive, BlueClaws Suspended in Bottom of the 11th

August 5, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - One night after Michael Almanzar hit a walk-off home run in the eleventh inning, the Drive (59-50, 23-16) and BlueClaws (66-43, 24-15) played another extra inning game to the eleventh. Only this time, the game was suspended because of rain with the score tied, 2-2.

Entering the bottom of the eleventh inning, lightning was seen outside Fluor Field, and the game was delayed as severe storms moved through the area. A half hour later, the game was officially suspended.

The teams will not meet again for the rest of the season. As per Minor League Baseball rules, the players' statistics will count, but the game will remain suspended, and no win or loss will be counted toward the teams' records.

Greenville began the scoring in the second inning, scoring two runs on a home run by Christian Vazquez, his third of the season. The home run also scored Reymond Fuentes, who walked with one out earlier in the inning.

The BlueClaws chipped away at the lead, scoring one each in the third and fourth innings. Anthony Hewitt scored on an RBI groundout by Jiwan James in the top of the third. Leandro Castro led off the top of the fourth with a double, and later scored on an error by Vladimir Frias.

Those two runs (one earned) were the only runs allowed by Drive starter Manuel Rivera. Rivera lasted seven innings, scattering four hits and striking out six.

Lakewood starter Jonathan Pettibone pitched six innings of six-hit ball, allowing just the Vazquez home run.

Each bullpen posted four innings of shutout relief, but not without chances.

Jeremy Hazelbaker reached base in the eighth inning with a one-out walk. Hazelbaker stole second during Shannon Wilkerson's at-bat, putting himself in scoring position. Wilkerson hit a single to center, but Hazelbaker was gunned down at home by Jiwan James, whose efforts kept the game tied at two.

Lakewood reached two baserunners with one out in the ninth, but the threat ended with a fly ball to right and a groundout to first.

Greenville will continue their homestand on Friday versus the Rome Braves. The first game of the five-game series will feature right-hander Kendal Volz (6-4, 3.75 ERA) matching up versus Rome southpaw Jeffrey Lorick (3-4, 1.40 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Fluor Field.

Following tomorrow's game, fans will be treated to a spectacular fireworks show. For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, or luxury accommodations, call (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
