Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem and Potomac split a doubleheader at Lewis-Gale Field Monday night as Brock Huntzinger hurled the first complete game of the year for the Sox in a 4-1 victory in the opener before the Nationals offense awakened in the second contest for an 8-5 win. On a dreary night, the two squads finally were able to play ball after traveling to Boston and back over the weekend for the scheduled Futures at Fenway contest that was rained out Saturday.
Huntzinger improved to 7-4 on the season in the opener with seven innings of four-hit ball, yielding just a solo home run to Brian Peacock in the second. The Sox responded with four in the fourth, compiling five hits in the frame. Will Middlebrooks drove in two runs with a single to left-center, while Ryan Dent and Jon Hee each added a two-out RBI single to put Salem up 4-1. Huntzinger worked around a baserunner in each of the final three innings and tossed just the seventh complete game in the Carolina League this year.
The nightcap was a see-saw affair that saw the teams combine for 12 runs in the first three innings. Potomac jumped out to a 7-2 lead midway through the third thanks to a two-out bases clearing double off the bat of Steve Lombardozzi. The Nationals second baseman finished with four RBI on the night, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Will Ortiz added three hits of his own, including a double to go along with three RBI, while Dan Lyons went 2-for-2, scoring three times.
Salem scored three times in the bottom of the third to make it interesting, but were unable to scratch across any more against a Potomac bullpen that yielded just two hits in four innings. The P-Nats added an insurance run off of Cesar Cabral in the fifth to provide the final outcome.
Middlebrooks went a combined 3-for-6 with four RBI in the twin bill and was joined by Peter Hissey (2-for-6) as the only members of the Sox to record a base knock in both of the contests.
After an off day to enjoy the Major League All Star Game on Tuesday, the Sox return to Lewis-Gale Field on Wednesday night for the opener of a four-game series against the first place Winston-Salem Dash. Michael Lee will get the call for the third time this year, while Terry Doyle starts for Winston. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
