Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that relief pitcher Corey Martin will rejoin the Chiefs and be in the bullpen for Friday's 6:30 p.m. game against Kane County. Martin's return puts the Chiefs roster at 25 players so is there is no corresponding roster move.
Martin, who started the year with the Chiefs with a 1-1 record and a 10.38 ERA through seven games is getting a second opportunity after great improvements since being sent down to Boise. In the seven games he played with the Chiefs, Martin walked six and struck out four over 8 2/3 innings while allowing 10 runs on 13 hits. He went on the disabled list with a calf strain on May 3 and a few days later was sent back to Extended Spring Training in Mesa, Arizona. Martin started the year in Peoria on April 9 with a one inning performance in which he gave up one run on one hit which was a solo homerun. He also walked one and struck out one in his first appearance. The best performance Martin gave the Chiefs was on April 20 when he threw 1 1/3 shutout innings giving up one hit with one strikeout. Martin's only win as a Chief came on April 29 against Wisconsin in his final Midwest League outing before going on the DL. He pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out one.
Martin joined the Boise Hawks for the Northwest League opener on June 18 and assumed the role of Hawks closer. In eight outings he has a sparkling 1.00 ERA and is seven-for-seven in save chances. In nine innings of work he has given up only five hits, has not issued a walk, and struck out nine for Boise. Martin made his Boise debit on June 19 with a perfect inning and a save against Yakima. He last outing was on Tuesday when he earned the save allowing two hits over one inning at Spokane. The only time he pitched for the Hawks and did not earn a save was on Monday when he finished an 8-3 loss with 2/3 of a perfect inning. Three times Martin has pitched on back-to-back days for Boise recording saves on June 19-20 and again June 28-29.
Martin, 24, a native of Yadkinville, NC, was drafted in the 27th round of the 2009 draft out of Western Carolina University in North Carolina. Last season he moved up to Boise July 1 and pitched out of Hawks bullpen 21 times going 2-2 with a 5.21 ERA. Marin went 7-4 as a senior at WCU and struck out 153 batters with 14 victories during 70 career outings.
