June 23, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
Erie, PA - A seven run rally in the top of the eighth inning pushed the Thunder past the SeaWolves, and Trenton defeated Erie 12-7 for their third straight win on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park. With the win, the Thunder improve to 43-27 on the season.
Seven home runs were hit between the two teams, with all of them coming in the first five innings. After exchanging solo home runs over the first two innings, the Thunder came up big in the third off LHP Ramon Garcia. They scored four runs in the frame, highlighted by three consecutive home runs from Daniel Brewer, Austin Krum and Austin Romine to give Trenton a 5-1 lead. It was the first time the Thunder hit three straight homers since April 17, 2004 when Kevin Reese, Robinson Cano and Jason Grove knocked out three in-a-row at New Hampshire.
However, Erie took the lead back in the bottom of the third off RHP DJ Mitchell. They scored five runs on just two hits, capped off by a three run home run from Audy Ciriaco, and had a 6-5 lead at the end of three innings.
INF Rawley Bishop continued the trend in the fifth inning, as he belted a home run off Mitchell to extend the SeaWolves lead to 7-5. Mitchell faced one more batter before being removed for Ryan Pope.
In the eighth inning off RHP Jared Gayhart (0-4), Trenton led off with three straight singles to load the bases for Romine. Gayhart proceeded to walk Romine, scoring Nunez from third to cut Erie's lead to one run. Brandon Laird then drove in a pair of runs on a double to right-centerfield, and the Thunder went back in front 8-7. After Jose Gil was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Marcos Vechionacci blasted a bases-clearing double to leftfield, and Trenton went up 12-7.
Pope, Kevin Whelan (1-1), and Grant Duff combined to pitch 4 2/3 innings and allowed just two hits. Whelan and Duff combined to retire the last nine batters in order.
Trenton and Erie close out their series on Thursday afternoon at 12:05 PM. RHP Hector Noesi takes the ball for the Thunder, while Erie will counter with RHP Anthony Shawler.
