San Jose Giants Dominate California League All-Star Roster

SAN JOSE, CA- Five San Jose Giants players have been named to the California League All-Star Team and will participate in a game versus the Carolina League All-Stars on June 22 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. First baseman Brandon Belt, outfielder Juan Perez and pitchers Justin Fitzgerald, Eric Surkamp and Craig Westcott will represent the defending California League champions in the All-Star contest. San Jose Giants skipper Brian Harper will manage the squad.

The five players selected are tied with the Lake Elsinore Storm for the most from any team in the California League this season. 23 players total have been named to the All-Star squad. Entering play on Thursday, San Jose boasts the top record in the North Division at 37-23. The Giants are second in the league in batting average (.281) and second in ERA (3.94).

Belt, who will start at first base in the All-Star game, is currently second in the California League with a .376 batting average. The first-year professional is tops in the league in doubles (22), on-base percentage (.484) and walks (42) while ranking third in RBI's (47) and slugging percentage (.594). The 22-year old has also hit six home runs and logged 13 stolen bases. Belt enjoyed a team-best 18-game hitting streak earlier this season.

Perez will anchor one of the three starting outfield spots for the California League in the All-Star game. The 23-year old is batting . 332 with seven home runs and 30 RBI's this season. Perez has also contributed 17 doubles, five triples and 10 stolen bases while his 123 total bases are second most in the league. Perez was also selected to the South Atlantic League All-Star team last year while as a member of the Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A).

Fitzgerald boasts a perfect 5-0 record and a 2.09 ERA in 10 starts this season. The 24-year old Santa Rosa native is third in the league in earned run average and tied for seventh in victories. He's allowed two runs or fewer in nine out of his 10 appearances while also having surrendered only two home runs in 56 innings overall. Fitzgerald is in his first season as a starting pitcher after working exclusively as a reliever in the first two years of his professional career.

Surkamp is 2-1 with a 3.51 ERA in 10 starts this year. The 22-year old southpaw leads the Giants pitching staff in strikeouts (60) and innings pitched (59). Surkamp fired a complete-game, two-hit shutout on May 16 versus Bakersfield while he's struck out at least six batters in seven starts this year. He's been especially tough at home with only three earned runs allowed over 27 innings pitched for a 1.00 ERA.

Westcott leads the California League with a stellar 1.38 ERA to go with a perfect 3-0 record through 10 starts this season. The 24-year old right-hander began the season with 18 consecutive scoreless innings and has allowed more than one earned run in only three starts this year. He's also limited the opposition to a .149 batting average with runners in scoring position. Westcott owns a career record of 10-0 after his selection by the San Francisco Giants in the 2009 draft.

Harper will manage the California League All-Stars, an honor resulting from the San Jose Giants winning the 2009 league championship. He'll be joined in Myrtle Beach by San Jose pitching coach Jerry Cram and athletic trainer L.J. Petra.
