SAN JOSE/MOUNTAIN VIEW - June 10, 2010 - KPMG LLP, the audit, tax and advisory firm, and the San Jose Giants today launched the San Jose area chapter of the Major League BaseballR Reviving Baseball in Inner CitiesT (RBIT) program to teach youths about baseball and life skills that can make a difference in their lives. The summer camps will be coordinated and produced by the Giants Sports Foundation, the San Jose Giants newly established 501(c)3.

Under the program, KPMG, which is helping underwrite the cost of the camps, and the Giants Sports Foundation, which is managing the camps, are working with YMCAs in Morgan Hill and Salinas, and the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Cruz to create three baseball camps for boys and girls ages 9 to 12. There also are plans for additional camp locations in the future.

Camps Include Life Skills KPMG volunteers will help at the camps and also will teach a "Fair Ball" course on ethics and integrity, one of four life skills education courses the firm has designed for the Major League Baseball RBI programs it supports across the country.

"The sport of baseball embodies lessons for youth that the YMCA also values: participation in sports, academic achievement, healthy lifestyles and the importance of teamwork," says Anthony Santos, YMCA youth sports coordinator. "We love it when our kids learn while they think they're just having fun."

"I think this is an excellent opportunity for all the kids in the area, and we're grateful for the San Jose Giants bringing their program to Santa Cruz," said Greyson Davis, Boys and Girls Club of Santa Cruz Athletics Director.

The Morgan Hill camp will consist of eight half-day sessions from June 21-25 and June 28-June 30, with the Salinas camp consisting of four full-day sessions from July 19-22, and Santa Cruz camp also running full-day sessions from July 26-29. The local organizations will coordinate the camp registration, with their members having the first opportunity to sign-up for the camps that are expected to serve 100 boys and girls at each location.

"We are thrilled to partner with KPMG to bring the San Jose Giants baseball camps to neighboring communities," said Jim Weyermann, president and CEO of the San Jose Giants. "We are extremely grateful to have the opportunity to work with KPMG on this project, the RBI program is proven to foster baseball talent in deserving communities and we look forward to a successful partnership with our host sites and KPMG."

"Our firm is excited to be introducing the RBI program with the Giants Sports Foundation, the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club, particularly given the program's focus on promoting interest in sports and an active lifestyle among youths, increasing self-esteem, and encouraging kids to stay in school," said Tim Zanni, the managing partner of KPMG's Silicon Valley office.

KPMG, the national sponsor of the Major League Baseball RBI program with chapters across the country, and the San Jose Giants each have a long history of serving their local communities. In particular, during this recession, helping non-profits, in this case by enabling another local program, is more important than ever.

In each of the past four seasons, the San Jose Giants consistently raised over $300,000 for youth sports in the region and $100,000 for non-profit organizations. Due to the increased demand in community programs, the San Jose Giants launched the Giants Sports Foundation, a dedicated non-profit corporation, in 2010 to lead the community endeavors. The RBI program is the newest community initiative for the Giants Sports Foundation.

In addition to the RBI program, KPMG supports many local non-profit organizations through charitable giving and volunteering in communities where its employees live and work. The Children's Discovery Museum, Second Harvest Food Bank and RAFT (Resource Area for Teaching) are among the many other organizations in the Bay Area receiving KPMG support.
