Jay Austin Selected for California League All-Star Team

June 10, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(LANCASTER, CA) - Jay Austin has been selected to represent Lancaster in this year's annual All-Star game between the California League and the Carolina League. One of the youngest players at the Advanced Class A level at just 19, the JetHawks outfielder will join 22 other Cal League players for the All-Star Festivities June 21-22. The game will be hosted by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Carolina League.

A native of Georgia who will not turn 20 until August, Austin has been one of the top lead-off hitters in the California League this year. A .274 hitter, Austin is second in the circuit with 26 steals. He already has more steals than any JetHawks player in four years and is on a pace to threaten the JetHawks all time single season record, set by Emilio Bonifacio in 2006.

The Lancaster center fielder has also shown surprising power this season. After hitting just one home run in his first full season in 2009, Austin already has hit six home runs this year, driving in 31 runs to tie for the team lead.

JetHawks outfielders have made their mark in recent years at the All-Star game. Jon Gaston was the game's MVP with his game-winning homer off former JetHawks pitcher Derrick Loop in 2009. Bubba Bell was awarded the same honor in 2007.

The game will be played Tuesday, June 22 at BB&T Coastal Field, the home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The All-Star festivities begin Monday, June 21 and include a banquet and the annual home run derby.

Besides Austin, the JetHawks will also be represented at the All-Star game by General Manager Larry Thornhill and Assistant General Manager Derek Sharp.

The 2010 season marks the 15th anniversary of professional baseball in the Antelope Valley, and since its inaugural game in 1996, The Hangar has produced more than 90 Major Leaguers and inducted 25 members into The JetHawks Hall of Fame. Don't miss out on your chance to be a part of 15 years of Hangar Heroes in 2010.
