San Jose Giants News Release
Modesto's Ryan Peisel hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning propelling the Nuts to a dramatic 5-4 victory over the San Jose Giants on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. San Jose was one out away from picking-up the win until Peisel drove a 1-1 pitch from Edwin Quirarte over the fence in left for the go-ahead home run. With the loss, the Giants (37-24) see their North Division lead over Modesto (32-27) trimmed to four games. San Jose has nine games remaining in the first half.
Quirarte (1-3), who entered the game with two outs and a runner at first base in the top of the ninth inning, suffered the loss. Giants starter Eric Surkamp received a no-decision after tossing seven innings with three runs (two earned) and six hits allowed. Surkamp walked one and struck out two.
Brandon Belt (2-for-3, 2B), Aaron Lowenstein (2-for-3, 2B) and Emmanuel Burriss (2-for-3, RBI, SB) all produced multi-hit games at the plate for San Jose. The Giants out-hit Modesto by an 11-8 margin.
San Jose appeared poised for a victory after scoring a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Belt began the frame with a double off the fence down the right field line before he was tagged out at third attempting to advance on Charlie Culberson's bunt. Drew Biery followed with a line drive single into right center advancing Culberson to third and then Wendell Fairley lined a 3-0 pitch from Nuts reliever Kurt Yacko into left field to score the go- ahead run.
The Giants had a chance to add to their lead as Joel Weeks followed with another single to load the bases, however Yacko struck out both Johnny Monell and James Simmons to end the inning.
Ben Wilshire (1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO), who struck out two in a scoreless top of the eighth with the game tied, returned to the mound in the ninth for San Jose. Wilshire quickly set down the first two batters as Thomas Field flied out to right and Erik Wetzel struck out swinging. Pinch-hitter Tim Wheeler then drew a five-pitch walk to set-up Peisel's two-run homer.
Peisel (2-for-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI) also homered in the third inning for Modesto. He entered the game with no home runs in 92 at-bats this season.
The Giants initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Culberson stole third base with one out and came home when the throw from catcher Jordan Pacheco bounced down the left field line for an error.
Modesto quickly tied the score in the top of the third on Peisel's solo homer before the Giants plated two runs in the bottom of the inning. Lowenstein started the frame with a double off the fence in left center field before Simmons singled to put runners on the corners. Burriss then grounded out to first base scoring Lowenstein to make it 2-1. Juan Perez followed with an RBI double to deep left center extending the San Jose lead to 3-1.
Surkamp held the Nuts off the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the sixth. With one out, consecutive singles from Michael Mitchell and Jimmy Cesario put runners on first and second before a successful double steal. Pacheco then reached on a fielding error committed by Burriss at shortstop as Mitchell scored the first run of the inning. Michael Zuanich followed by grounding out to third bringing home Cesario to make it 3-3.
The game would remain tied until Fairley's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. Yacko (3-2) picked-up the win after working two innings to finish the game. Yacko allowed one run with no walks and four strikeouts. The Nuts reliever retired the last five batters that he faced, including four on strikeouts.
