Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs (24-23) ended a four-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon, defeating the New Britain Rock Cats 11-3 in front of 6,464 at Hadlock Field. Portland is now 11-3 on the season against the Cats, and have tied the four-game series at one game apiece.
Ryne Miller (2-3) tossed six scoreless innings on two hits, retiring the final 10 batters faced, and picking up Portland's longest start since May 12. Miller allowed two hits, three walks, fanned four, and earned his first win at Hadlock Field this season.
Ryan Kalish (5-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R) snapped a scoreless game by leading off the fourth inning with a solo-homer into the U.S. Cellular Pavilion. The blast was the seventh of the season for Kalish and the first for the team since Mike Cameron's walk-off homer on May 23rd. Kalish also smacked a 2-run double off the right-center field wall in the seventh during Portland's six run attack off losing pitcher Mike McCardell (0-5) and reliever Michael Allen. Che-Hsuan Lin and Yamaico Navarro each chipped in with RBI singles in the inning. Nate Spears capped off the six-run seventh inning with a RBI double.
The Sea Dogs grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded single by Anthony Rizzo, scoring Spears. On the play, Lin was thrown out at the plate for the second out. Rizzo scored in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single from Navarro.
Eammon Portice escaped a huge jam in the seventh inning, retiring the final batters after the Rock Cats loaded the bases with nobody out, preserving the 2-0 lead.
The Rock Cats spoiled the shutout with a three run homer by Yangervis Solarte in the eighth inning off Portice. The Sea Dogs responded with a three run homer off their own, by Ray Chang, in the bottom half of the inning.
The Portland Sea Dogs and New Britain Rock Cats continue the series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM at Hadlock Field. Kyle Weiland (0-4) gets the start for the Sea Dogs. He will be opposed by Tyler Robertson (0-4).
Notes: Kalish became the ninth player in franchise history to collect five hits in a game, it was the first five hit day in his career. Jeff Natale, July 17, 2007 verse New Hampshire, was the last to accomplish the feat. The Sea Dogs collected a season high 17 hits.
