TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Bowie Baysox will meet in game two of a four-game series...Three big innings helped the Baysox to a 10-1 over the Flying Squirrels in the opener of the four-game series at The Diamond as Daryl Maday suffered his first loss of the season.
TONIGHT'S STARTER: Right-hander David Mixon gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Received a no-decision at Binghamton 5/24...Gave up two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings...Struck out four batters and walked three...Retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced...Faced the minimum through his first three innings on the mound...Worked out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the fourth inning...Gave up three straight hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to the final three batters he faced...Final two batters drove in runs...Threw 84 pitches, 49 strikes...Recorded 10 ground outs and three fly outs...Three walks were a season high...Retired the leadoff batter in all six of innings on the mound...Has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of his nine starts...Ranks third the Eastern League in fewest base runners per nine innings at 9.29 (54/52.1 IP) and WHIP (0.99)...Ranked fourth in the Eastern League with a .212 batting average against.
Right-hander Ryhoei Tanaka gets the nod in game two of the series for the Baysox...Is 1-0 in his last two starts and has allowed just two runs on 14 hits over his last 12 innings since giving up a season-high five runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings against the Flying Squirrels on 5/12...First win came against Richmond and David Mixon on 4/11 when he tossed six scoreless innings, giving up just five hits while striking out four and walking none...Is 1-2 with a 4.58 ERA (9R/17.2IP) overall in three starts against the Flying Squirrels...Ranks fifth in the Eastern League with a 1.72 BB/9IP (9BB/47IP)...Tied for fourth in the league with seven home runs allowed...Has pitched five-plus innings in all nine of his outings this season...Spent all of 2009 with Double-A BOW in his first pro season in the United States...Went 4-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 21G/12GS...Began the season in the bullpen and worked 12 scoreless innings before being moved to the rotation 7/4/09 @ ALT...Went 4-4 with a 3.63 ERA in 12GS...Native of Ishikawa, Japan.
TROUBLE WITH INFLATION: Since moving to a season-best nine-games over .500 at 22-13, the Flying Squirrels have been outscored 75-46 over the last 13 games...The club's has posted a 5.18 ERA over that span and the pitching staff's overall ERA has climbed from 2.58 to 3.28...Through the first 35 games, Richmond gave up more than six runs just once...The team has allowed more than six runs seven times over the last 13 games...The Flying Squirrels are 4-9 over their last 13 contests and have fallen from 1 1/2 games ahead in the Western Division to five games behind...After posting an Eastern League-low 2.39 ERA in April, the club has a 3.95 ERA in May...The Flying Squirrels now rank second in the Eastern League in team ERA, trailing Altoona (3.20).
DONE INN-ING: Flying Squirrels pitching has allowed three runs or more in an inning 11 times over the last 13 games including three times last night...Over the previous 35 games, Richmond pitching allowed three runs or more in a inning just eight times.
ONE-SIDED: Five of Richmond's last six games have been decided by six runs or more...The club is 2-3 in those contests...Prior to last Sunday's series finale at Reading, 34 of the Flying Squirrels' first 42 games were decided by three runs or less...Overall on the season, Richmond is 6-7 in games decided by more than three runs...The club is 20-15 in games decided by three runs or fewer.
MAY WE TURN THE CALENDAR: Catcher Jackson Williams is hitting just .129 (9-for-70) in 22 games this month...He has struck out 21 times and has walked 11 over that span...The 24-year-old began the season with an 11-game hit streak (14-for-34) but is batting just .108 (9-for-83) over his last 27 games...His average has dropped from .412 to .197 over that span...Outfielder Darren Ford is batting just .225 (20-for-89) in 24 games in May; however, he has not been held hitless in more than two consecutive games.
THE DON JUAN: Super utility man Juan Ciriaco is 14-for-32 (.438) at the plate over his last 11 games with three doubles, a triple, three RBI and five runs scored...The 26-year-old has started games at third base (4), short stop (3), first base (3), second base (2) and in right field (2) and left field (1) since being sent down from Triple-A Fresno.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 58 double plays in 48 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: The 10 runs allowed by the Flying Squirrels last night equaled the most given up by the club this season...Richmond also allowed 10 runs on Tuesday night in its 10-0 loss to Binghamton.
