Binghamton Blues. Akron's offense faltered again Friday night at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton as the B-Mets defeated the Aeros 2-1 in the opener of a four-game series. Binghamton's Brad Holt and Akron's Alex White, the starting pitchers and fellow first-round draft picks in the last two years, were locked in an early pitcher's duel. White allowed the first mistakes as a sac fly in the third and a passed ball and wild pitch combination in the fourth made it 2-0 for the Mets. Meanwhile, the Aeros collected just four hits total and did not produce a rally again until the top of the ninth. Jared Goedert began the frame with a single and moved to second on a catcher's indifference. An RBI single by John Drennen made it a one-run game and Jerad Head drew a walk but catcher Damaso Espino struck out to end the comeback. Holt (1-4) earned the win in his best start this season while White (1-1) took the loss and B-Mets reliever Clint Everts earned his second save despite the rocky ninth.
Tar Heel Legend. The right-hander White earned his second quality start in as many Double-A appearances Friday night in New York despite his first loss. Promoted from the Class A Kinston Indians last week, he already is tied with current Akron reliever Zach Putnam for the team lead in quality starts. The North Carolina product allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks in six innings while striking out a pair and he now has a 2.68 ERA between the K-Tribe and the Aeros in 2010. White was Cleveland's first-round draft pick (15th overall) last year and is the second-youngest player on roster (21 years, 9 months).
Price on Fire. White was not the only Akron pitcher to perform admirably Friday as reliever Bryan Price delivered two more scoreless innings of work. The consistent Price allowed just two hits while striking out a pair in allowing the Aeros to stay in the game. He now has 12 strikeouts against four hits and no walks in eight scoreless innings in his past six outings. The Indians acquired the Rice University product in the Victor Martinez trade with the Boston Red Sox last July.
Go-Go Goedert. Third baseman Jared Goedert yet again extended his hitting streak Friday night, leading the offense by finishing 1-2 at the plate with a pair of walks. Goedert now has hit safely in 17 consecutive games since May 10 as he currently ranks second in the Eastern League with a .338 batting average and ranks sixth with a .912 OPS. The 25-year-old native of Concordia, KS is having a career year for the purple and black as he began 2010 with a .264 minor league batting average in 362 games played. Last season, injuries limited him to a .224 mark in 92 games played for the defending EL Champions.
Struggle Street. Ever since starting the season with a 5-1 record, the Aeros have had problems collecting a consistent streak of wins. The team is now just 14-28 in the past 42 games while being out-scored by an average of 1.3 runs per contest.
