Lexington Legends News Release
Kody Hinze's three-run double capped a five-run third inning for Lexington, and the Legends went on to beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 7-5 Friday night in Greensboro.
Hinze, who leads the South Atlantic League in RBI with 47, hit a line drive down the left field line to clear the bases, giving the Legends a 5-1 lead. Greensboro had taken a 1-0 lead on a first-inning solo homer by Justin Bass.
Andy Simunic doubled to start the third inning, in which the Legends sent nine men to the plate. Simunic advanced to third on an infield out by Brian Kemp, and scored on a single by Jose Altuve. After Altuve stole second, Jiovanni Mier bunted for a single, moving Altuve to third. J.D. Martinez singled to drive in Altuve, putting the Legends in front 2-1, and sending Mier to second. Jake Goebbert's single loaded the bases and set the stage for Hinze.
Greensboro rallied with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull within one at 5-4, and each team scored a run in the seventh.
The Legends got an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Simunic singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kemp and to third on a bunt single by Altuve. Jiovanni Mier's infield out brought Simunic home and provided the final margin.
Tanner Bushue (3-2) worked the first six innings and got the win. Kirk Clark pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save. Greensboro starter Bryan Evans (4-2) was the losing pitcher.
The series continues with a 7 p.m. game Saturday night in Greensboro.
