Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns (22-18) continued their dominance of the Delmarva Shorebirds (18-22) in 2010 with a 10-6 victory. The Suns have now won six of the teams' eight contests.
Hagerstown's offense got off to a good start, picking up a run after lead-off hitter Fransico Soriano doubled to left field and later scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Dan Lyons.
The top of the Suns lineup combined to extend the Hagerstown lead again in the top of the third inning. With one out Soriano, Hagerstown's shortstop, reached on an error and advanced on two wild pitches while Lyons was at the plate. After Lyons flew out to left field, third baseman Steven Souza walked, stole second and scored right behind Soriano on a single by first baseman Justin Bloxom.
The Suns offense was not sated yet, as in the top of the fourth inning they poured on five more runs on six hits giving the Suns an 8-0 lead. Souza and left fielder JP Ramirez both doubled in the inning, while Soriano, Lyons, Bloxom and center fielder Eury Perez each singled in the frame.
Delmarva starting pitcher Tony Butler (1-4) was lifted with two outs in the fourth inning and was responsible for the first eight Hagerstown runs. The left hander took the loss, though only six of the eight runs he allowed were earned.
The Shorebirds got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning as catcher Michael Ohlman hit a solo home run off Suns starter Jack McGeary (4-1) with one out in the inning. Delmarva added another in the fifth as second baseman Gary Helmick was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a single by DH Tyler Kelly.
McGeary started the sixth inning for the Suns, but loaded the bases on a hit, a hit by pitch and a walk with nobody out. Left hander Glenn Gibson came on in relief of McGeary and got the Suns out of the jam with only one run coming in.
McGeary got the win for Hagerstown, allowing three runs in five innings with four strikeouts and just two walks.
Hagerstown added a run in the top of the seventh inning before Delmarva rallied for three in the bottom half of the seventh off Gibson without making an out, bringing the score to 10-6.
Patrick Arnold worked the final three innings for Hagerstown without allowing a run to earn his first save of the season.
The Suns and Shorebirds will play a double header at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday starting at 5:35. Both games will be seven inning affairs.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
