Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Greenville, SC - With two outs and two on in a tie game, Greenville Drive reliever Anatanaer Batista balked in the go-ahead run from third to key a three-run ninth inning in a 5-2 Augusta GreenJackets victory from Fluor Field on Friday night.
Chris Dominguez doubled off Batista to open the frame and moved to third with two outs. As Nick Liles strode to home, Batista started and then stopped his motion before the costly balk was called by the home plate umpire. Later in the inning, the Jackets would score two more insurance runs on back-to-back singles by Sharlon Schoop and Ryan Lollis.
The GreenJackets struck first with a run on a double play ball in the second. Greenville tied things an inning later on a Ronald Bermudez RBI single. With two outs in the fifth and men on at the corners, Augusta broke a 1-1 tie as Nick Liles scored from third as the back end of a double steal to give the Jackets a short-lived lead. On the very first pitch of the bottom of the fifth, Jeremy Hazelbaker took Augusta starter Jorge Bucardo deep for a game-tying solo homer to knot things at two.
Bucardo was ineffective following his best start of the year, tossing just 4.2 innings and allowing two runs on six hits, walking three and hitting one. The GreenJackets bullpen continued their weeklong string of good outings, as Chris Gloor and Ryan Verdugo (1-1) kept the Drive scoreless for the final 4.1 innings on just three hits with seven strikeouts. Augusta's bullpen has now been unscored upon for 30.1 consecutive innings.
Ryan Pressly made the most of a spot start for the Drive, allowing one earned run and one unearned run in six strong innings. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out five. Batista (1-2) retired six of the first seven hitters he faced before running into trouble in the ninth while taking the loss.
BJ Salsbury (4-2, 3.40) takes the ball in a series now even at one to face either Kendal Volz or Manuel Rivera. First pitch in Greenville will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
