Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Game One:
KANNAPOLIS, NC - In a back-and-forth contest, the West Virginia Power avoided a big come-from-behind defeat at the hands of the Kannapolis Intimidators in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday and won the contest 10-6.
Early on in the game it was all falling right in favor of the Power (7-9) as they capitalized on mistakes by the Intimidators (8-9). The Power grabbed two runs in the second inning off lefty starter Joe Serafin (2-2). In the second Rogelio Noris doubled, reached third on an error and scored as the next hitter Wes Freeman doubled. Freeman would then score on a grounder to third that went right under the glove of Juan Silverio and into left the second error of the game.
The Power extended their lead in the third with two more as Jesus Brito reached on the third error of the ballgame and Noris hit a two-run blast with two outs in the inning.
The Power added another run in the fourth to make the game 5-0 before the Intimidators mounted their comeback.
Against Power starter Hunter Strickland, the Intimidators had the first three batters reach base, loading the bases with no one out. Ian Gac hit a sacrifice fly before a three-run home run from Kyle Colligan made it a 5-4 game. Strickland then exited for Marc Baca (2-0) who allowed a double to Trayce Thompson before an error played Thompson, tying the game at five.
However, in the seventh and final inning, the Power stole back the lead for good. Bengie Gonzalez started the inning off reaching on an error before he was sacrificed to second. Serafin was then lifted and ended the game allowing two earned over 6.1 innings and Drew O'Neil entered the game. O'Neil was then greeted with two singles, a triple by Aaron Baker and two doubles, allowing five to score. The Intimidators would get one back in the seventh but it wasn't enough.
The loss was the third in 11 games for the Intimidators and dropped them below .500.
Game Two:
KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Kannapolis Intimidators cleaned up their act from game one as Terry Doyle tossed five scoreless en route to a 5-0 victory in game two of the doubleheader against the West Virginia Power.
The Intimidators (9-9), who made four errors and other more mental mistakes in game one played a flawless game in the field. Doyle (2-1) walked five and struck out five and worked out of two bases loaded jams, one in the fourth with a 5-4-3 double play. Garrett Johnson pitched a clean sixth and Ryan Buch the seventh for the shutout, the second of the season.
The Intimidators got to Power (7-10) starter Nathan Baker (1-3) for three runs in his 4.2 innings of work. Miguel Gonzalez hit his first and second home run of the season in the third to open the scoring and in the fifth to give the Intimidators a 3-0 lead. The Intimidators added two more in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Trayce Thompson and Jose Vargas, and an RBI-single by Kyle Davis to make it 5-0.
The win was the first for the Intimidators in doubleheaders this season after losing the first three.
Game three of the four-game series will be on Monday at 7:05 in Kannapolis as Cameron Bayne (1-2) will face Kyle McPherson (0-2) for West Virginia.
