Frederick, MD - Oscar Tejeda went 3-5 for the Red Sox and Ryan Lavarnway jacked his league-leading fifth homer of the season, but the Keys scored five times off Salem reliever Michael Lee to emerge victorious on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. LJ Hoes slapped a bases-loaded triple down the right field line in the last of the seventh to give Frederick its first lead of the game, and the Keys hung on for a 8-4 come-from-behind win to open the three-game set. Hoes' clutch hit came in a five-run bottom of the seventh for the Keys, immediately after the Red Sox scored a run in the top half of the inning. Salem led 2-0 and 3-2, but the Keys scored six of their eight runs in the final two and half innings to emerge victorious.
Salem took a 2-0 lead thanks to Tim Federowicz' RBI double in the third inning. The line drive followed a pair of Frederick errors, making both runs unearned off Keys starter Kenny Moreland. Moreland allowed only those two unearned tallies on just three hits over five innings and received a no decision.
Salem starter Alex Wilson struck out six over four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fifth. He yielded two singles, two walks, and two runs in the last of the fifth before giving way to Lee. Xavier Avery, who went 2-4 for the Keys, drilled a two-run single into left-field to even the score at two.
Still all square into the seventh, the Red Sox rallied for a go-ahead run behind three singles. Ryan Dent and David Mailman set the table for Tejeda to connect for the two-out RBI to make it a 3-2 Salem lead.
But the advantage would be short-lived as Frederick batted around in the bottom of the seventh to score a quintet against Lee. The Keys loaded the bases before a single man was retired and Kyle Hudson drew a bags-packed walked to tie the game. The ensuing batter, Hoes, drove in three more and later scored on Buck Britton's two-out double. Lee did strike out the side in the seventh, but also surrendered four hits, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch.
The two teams traded solo homers in the eighth, as Lavarnway drove an opposite field fly beyond the right-field wall to cut the deficit to 7-4. In the bottom of the inning, Jacob Julius regained the four-run edge for the Keys with a solo blast off Blake Maxwell.
Salem managed just one baserunner in the ninth off Frederick closer Brandon Cooney, who finished off the Sox in the series opener.
The Red Sox and Keys next meet in a Saturday matinee, with first pitch scheduled for 2PM. Salem sends Stolmy Pimentel to the hill against Frederick lefty Rick Zagone.
