Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem took advantage of four Kinston errors to score four unearned runs and beat the K-Tribe 4-2 at BB&T Ballpark on Friday night. The Dash (5-3) ran its season-best win streak to three games and took the opener of the three-game weekend series.
Kinston (3-5) scored the night's first run in the second inning off Dash starter Charlie Leesman. Kyle Bellows and Karexon Sanchez both walked to start the inning and Bellows moved to third base on a fielder's choice. Ronald Rivas then drove him home with a single to right to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
Winston-Salem was held scoreless for the first three innings against K-Tribe starter Alex White (1-1), but struck for three in the fourth. With one out, White walked Seth Loman and Kenny Williams, Jr. Luis Sierra then hit a grounder to second, but Jason Kipnis' flip to the shortstop was dropped for an error to load the bases. After Ozzie Lewis struck out, Drew Garcia grounded to Rivas. But his flip to Kipnis at second was also dropped, allowing a run to score and extending the inning. The next batter, Justin Greene, delivered a two-run single to right, scoring Williams and Sierra to put the Dash ahead 3-1.
The Indians tightened things in the sixth inning against Winston-Salem reliever Dylan Axelrod. Bellows started by reaching second on a throwing error by Jon Gilmore. He advanced to third two batters later and scored when Rivas drove him in with an infield single to cut the Dash lead to 3-2.
Joe McEwing's team restored the two-run advantage in the eighth inning when Sierra singled against Matt Langwell. A sacrifice and a single moved Sierra to third with one out. Greene then hit a pop-up to shallow center field that was dropped by the shortstop Rivas, scoring Sierra. It was the fourth unearned run of the night for Winston-Salem.
Dan Remenowsky worked around a walk and a single in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. In doing so, he preserved Leesman's (1-1) first win in a Dash uniform. The lefty allowed one run over five innings despite throwing more balls than strikes on the night.
The three-game series continues on Saturday night when Nevin Griffith (1-0, 1.50) makes his second start of the season against Kinston's T.J. House (0-1, 3.60). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. The webcast pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
