Runs Equal Funds For B+ Foundation In 2010
April 16, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Over the franchise's 17-year history, the Wilmington Blue Rocks have consistently made it a priority to give back to the community. With that in mind, the Rocks have partnered with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation to present "Score For A Cure".
Every time Wilmington scores a run at Frawley Stadium in 2010, AstraZeneca will make a contribution to The B+ Foundation up to a combined season total of $5,000.
The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation honors the memory of Andrew McDonough, a 14-year-old athlete and 'A' student at Salesianum High School in Wilmington. Andrew went from playing four soccer games on January 27, 2007 to cardiac arrest and a diagnosis of leukemia and sepsis within 48 hours. He passed away on July 14, 2007. Andrew's blood type and the family's motto was, and continues to be, "B+" (Be Positive).
In honor of McDonough's positive outlook, the Foundation was established with three main objectives. The Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research, provides assistance to families of critically ill children, and spreads the "B+" message via outreach into the community. In 2009, The B+ Foundation awarded over $400,000 in assistance.
To help keep track of how much assistance AstraZeneca and the Blue Rocks have given B+, there will be a tally board in right field, which will show fans how many runs the Rocks have scored all year long. "We know that a healthier world cannot come from medicines alone," said Tyrone Jones, Director, Corporate Community Alliances at AstraZeneca. "It comes from collaboration, collaboration with our employees, nonprofit agencies, and the community."
Taking it a step further, the Blue Rocks will wear special jerseys on August 20, which will be known as B+ Foundation Night at Frawley Stadium. The jerseys will be auctioned off and the proceeds will benefit The B+ Foundation.
The Blue Rocks will open play on the road in 2010 on April 8 in Myrtle Beach, SC against the Pelicans (Atlanta Braves). The home opener comes on April 16 with the first of a record 15 fireworks shows at Frawley Stadium this season as the Blue Crew hosts the Potomac Nationals (Washington Nationals). Every Friday in 2010 will have post-game fireworks at Frawley.
Blue Rocks individual game tickets, ticket plans, and group outings are all currently on sale. You can purchase tickets over the phone at 302-888-BLUE; online at www.bluerocks.com; or in person at the Frawley Stadium ticket window, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
