PORTLAND, ME - Three different Sound Tigers scored goals and Nathan Lawson made 23 saves in net as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers held on for a 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Sound Tigers improve to 7-5-0-0 on the season.
The Sound Tigers held the better of the play in the first period and came out of it with a 1-0 lead thanks to a power-play goal by Trevor Smith at the 6:44 mark. Mark Flood wound up for a blast from the blue-line and Smith was in front of the net to tip the puck past Johnas Enroth for his fourth tally of the season.
A misplay by Nathan Lawson allowed the Pirates to tie the game 2:39 into the period. As Lawson tried to clear the puck to the corner, he sent it right to the stick of Mark Mancari. Mancari sent a pass into the slot for Mark McCutcheon who sent a shot into the top of the net, over a sprawled out Lawson who was attempting to dive back into position.
Greg Mauldin and Jesse Joensuu hooked up midway through the second period to give the Sound Tigers the lead again. Joensuu brought the puck into the offensive zone and slid a centering pass to Mauldin in the slot. Mauldin quickly one-timed a shot past Enroth for a 2-1 Tiger lead after two periods.
The Sound Tigers took a 3-1 lead 9:10 into the third period when Matt Martin netted his first professional goal. Micheal Haley picked off a Portland clearing attempt and sent a quick shot toward the front of the net which Martin redirected past Enroth for the goal.
Portland did not go quietly late in the game as McCutcheon scored his second goal of the net, pounding home a loose rebound with 3:10 to go. However, the Tigers defense held strong to seal the victory.
The Sound Tigers close out their road trip Sunday afternoon when they visit the Providence Bruins. Face-off at the Providence Civic Center is set for 4:00 pm.
