Peoria Rivermen News Release
CLEVELAND (October 31, 2009) - The Peoria Rivermen controlled play and held a distinct edge in shots over the Lake Erie Monsters on Saturday afternoon but it all added up to a 4-1 loss at Quicken Loans Arena. In the two-game series, the Rivermen outshot the Monsters 82 to 47 but picked up just one out of a possible four points in the standings.
Tyler Weiman, reassigned from Colorado (NHL) on Friday made his first start in 10 days and came within 1:32 of his second consecutive shutout. The sixth-year pro turned aside 39 shots to improve to 4-3-0 on the season.
The shutout bid ended when Chris Porter backhanded home a rebound goal at 18:28 for his fifth goal in the last six games. Along with Adam Cracknell, Jonas Junland earned an assist on the play for his team-leading 12th point of the season and has registered at least one point in all but one game this season.
Hannu Toivonen took the loss with 18 saves, making his first appearance since Oct. 17 following a bout with the flu.
The first goal of the game did not come until 7:30 of the second period when a fortunate bounce for David Marshall netted him his first AHL goal. The rookie was the last one to touch a shot taken by Matt Ford that was redirected multiple times on its way through the legs of Toivonen. Brian Fahey made it 2-0 at 18:51 on a slapshot through traffic from the point.
The Monsters took a 3-0 lead at 12:51 of the third period as Brock Bradford quickly snapped the puck in the net just moments after an offensive zone faceoff. Lake Erie added an empty-net tally with just 25 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Monsters.
After the two teams combined for five power-play goals on Friday night, all five goals on Saturday were at even-strength. Peoria was 0-for-4 on the power play, all of which occurred in the first period.
Peoria wraps up their three-game swing on Sunday at 3p.m. in Hamilton, Ontario. All games can be heard live on Hippie Radio 101.1 FM as well as online through www.rivermen.net.
The Rivermen return home on Thursday to take on the San Antonio Rampage on 7 p.m. at Carver Arena. Tickets are available at the Rivermen office by calling 309-676-1040 or online at www.rivermen.net/tickets.
