Norfolk Admirals News Release
ALBANY, N.Y. - Brandon Bochenski stretched his goal-scoring streak to three games, but it would be the only offense the Norfolk Admirals (1-3-0-0) would muster as they fell to the Albany River Rats (3-1-0-0) 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Times-Union Center.
The Admirals out-shot the River Rats 18-6 in the opening frame and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Radek Smolenak set up the play by pinning the puck into the Albany zone in the right corner before feeding it to Ryan Craig behind the net. Craig then sent a perfect feed toward the slot and Brandon Bochenski one-timed it from top of the crease past River Rats netminder Justin Peters at 12:42. The goal was Bochenski's third of the young campaign.
Albany took control of the second period, out-shooting the Admirals 17-11 and out-scoring them 2-0. The River Rats tied the game at one goal apiece at 7:18. Bryan Rodney sent a shot from the left point wide of the net. The puck caromed off the wall to Steven Goertzen, who sent a shot past Norfolk netminder Jaroslav Janus short-side.
Albany took a 2-1 lead less than six minutes later. Zach Boychuk sent a shot from the left point that Janus blocked. The rebound dropped to the bottom of the left circle where Jonathan Paiement collected it and dished it across the crease to Stefan Chaput. Chaput sent a quick shot past Janus at 12:53.
The Admirals sent nine shots on Peters in the final frame but were unable to solve the Rats goaltender. Jerome Samson iced the game for the host club with an empty-net goal with 29 seconds remaining.
Jaroslav Janus (29 shots, 27 saves) took the loss in his professional debut.
Justin Peters (38 shots, 37 saves) earned the victory.
Norfolk was 0-3 on the power play. Albany was 0-1.
The Admirals will continue their road trip on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
