
Drive edged by Crawdads, 5-3

HICKORY, N.C. - The Greenville Drive edged the Hickory Crawdads, 5-3, before 805 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night. LF Cristian Santana hit a solo home run and doubled for the fourth straight game.
The Drive (24-25, 63-54) got on the board first with a run in the top of the third inning against RHP Wilmer Font. CF Jeremy Hazelbaker got on board with a one-out single, stole his way to second base and scored on an RBI base hit by LF Pete Hissey to make it 1-0. Font got back on track with two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth to conclude his start, surrendering only the one run.
The Crawdads (23-26, 56-62) came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth against RHP Brock Huntzinger, when Santana led off the frame with his 13th long-ball of the season. Huntzinger matched Font with five total frames of work, giving up just the one run, and both starters came away with no-decisions.
Greenville moved back in front with four unearned runs against the Crawdads bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings, moving ahead, 5-1. RHP Cody Eppley (1-3) was on the mound in the seventh when Greenville took a two-run lead on an error, two walks and a two-out, two run double by C Ryan Lavarnway. The Drive then added two more unearned tallies in the top of the eighth on two errors, one hit and one walk against LHP Yoon-Hee Nam.
In the bottom of the eighth, it was Hickory's turn to strike for two unearned runs against RHP Leanadro Marin (2-2). 2B Andres James opened the inning by reaching on an error charged to SS Oscar Tejeda. James then raced all the way in from first base on an RBI double hit by 1B Erik Morrison off the base of the left-center field wall. Morrison took third on the throw home on the play, and then scored on a sacrifice fly hit to center field by RF Jared Bolden, bringing the Crawdads back to within two runs, 5-3.
RHP Matt Nevarez dealt a one-two-three top of the ninth to send the game to the bottom of the ninth with the Crawdads only trailing by two. However, RHP Chad Povich took over on the mound and closed out the game with a scoreless frame, completing the 5-3 win for Greenville. Eppley was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while Marin registered the win and Povich logged the save for the Drive.
