CHARLESETON, SC - Augusta's Josh Mazzola collected two hits and two RBI as the GreenJackets snipped the RiverDogs, 10-6, in South Atlantic League action Tuesday night in front of 1,485 fans at Augusta's Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the victory, the GreenJackets capture the first game of the series and improve their second half record to 22-16 (57-50 overall) while the RiverDogs slip to 15-23 in the second half (54-54 overall).
Augusta jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first when Charlie Culberson smacked a leadoff single and advanced to second on Vladimir Frias' walk. Mazzola knocked a two-run double to center that plated Culberson and Frias.
The RiverDogs knotted the game at 2-2 in the third when Jose Pirela lined a leadoff single to right, Abraham Almonte drew a walk and Corban Joseph was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Melky Mesa lifted a sacrifice fly to right that knocked home Pirela while Almonte dashed to third. Taylor Grote smacked a RBI single to right that plated Almonte for the inning's second run.
The GreenJackets erupted for six runs and took a commanding 8-2 advantage in the fourth when Augusta sent 11 men to the plate. A two-run triple by Francisco Peguero, RBI singles by Ehire Adrianza, Culberson and Frias and a groundout accounted for the six runs.
Augusta tacked on a run in the fifth when Johnny Monell drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Adrianza's single up the middle. Consecutive wild pitches uncorked by RiverDogs reliever Andrew Brackman resulted in Monell rounding the bases and making the score 9-2.
Charleston cut into Augusta's lead in the seventh with a two-out rally to make the score 9-6 when Mesa walked and dashed to second on defensive indifference. Following a walk to Grote, Neall French smacked a RBI single that plated Mesa while Grote bumped to second. Garrison Lassiter added a RBI single to right that knocked home Grote as French advanced to second. Mitch Abeita lined a two-run double that drove in French and Lassiter for the inning's fourth run.
