Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA (August 4, 2009) - Myrtle Beach overcame a 1-0 first inning deficit, scoring a pair in the third and two more in the sixth to knock off Salem 4-1 on Tuesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. In the third, Cole Miles connected with a two-out, two-strike Seth Garrison fastball that cleared the fence in right field, transforming a 1-0 Sox lead into a 2-1 deficit. A few frames later, the Pelicans used three singles and a throwing error from Daniel Nava to add to their lead and produce the score that became the final, as Salem's offense was quieted after the early tally.
Jacob Thompson rebounded from Mike Jones' RBI single in his opening inning, holding the Red Sox at bay through the remainder of his five and two third innings on the hill for Myrtle Beach. The righthander out of the University of Virginia scattered seven hits and struck out five to improve to 5-3 on the season. Salem managed just one hit against the Pelican pen as three Myrtle relievers combined to blank the Sox over the final three and a third.
Seth Garrison had allowed just eight earned runs over his last ten games, but three earned and four total tallies surrendered on Tuesday yielded his ninth loss of the season. With limited run support, Garrison left with Salem trailing 4-1 after five and two thirds innings. Kyle Fernandes (2.1) and Jason Rice (1.0) shut the door the rest of the way, but the Red Sox were equally stymied by Myrtle's bullpen.
Cole Miles and Randy Gress each went 2-4 for the Pelicans as they inched back to within a half game of the Red Sox in the Southern Division standings. David Mailman led the Red Sox offensively, snapping out of a 3-39 slump with three hits in four at-bats. Tim Federowicz, who also had been struggling, went 2-4, recording multiple hits for the first time since June 30.
Aaron Reza made his return to the Salem Red Sox lineup on Tuesday, going 1-4 with Salem's only run and a couple of strikeouts. Reza had been out with a broken wrist since May 18.
With second-place in the division on the line, the Sox and Pelicans will reunite for the series' rubber match on Wednesday evening, with Kyle Weiland starting opposite Erik Cordier. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
