Pimentel's Win Streak Ends as Drive Lose 3-1
July 22, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - It had been awhile since Stolmy Pimentel experienced a loss. For the first time since May 21st - two months and a day - the right-hander was defeated, as his franchise record eight-game win streak was snapped Wednesday night at Fluor Field.
Pimentel (9-4) allowed three runs, coming on a pair of homers, as the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds (49-45, 13-12) spoiled the Drive's (51-42, 12-13) homecoming with a 3-1 victory in front of 4,201 fans.
Joe Mahoney accounted for the game's first run, leading off the top of the second with a solo home run. The very next inning, the Shorebirds capped their scoring as Greg Miclat singled and Ron Welty lifted a two-run roundtripper. Both hits came after Pimentel retired the first two batters of the inning.
Other than the two bad pitches that plated Delmarva's runs, Pimentel was up to his usual tricks. The 19-year-old Dominican did not walk a batter during his 6.0 inning outing, and fanned six batters.
Shorebirds starter Oliver Drake (6-6) won the battle on the bump, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and two walks while striking out seven. It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh that the Drive were able to get on the scoreboard, against Scott Mueller.
Jered Stanley drew a leadoff walk from the righty, and Will Middlebrooks executed a perfect hit-and-run, doubling off the right-field for an RBI. But it would be the only run that Greenville would muster.
The Drive did receive solid relief from their bullpen as Fabian Williamson and Chad Povich combined to hold the Shorebirds scoreless over the final three innings. Williamson walked two and struckout one in 1-2/3 no-hit innings, and Povich was perfect in the final 1-1/3 frames.
The Drive and Shorebirds meet in game two of their four-game series on Thursday with first pitch set for 7:05 PM at Fluor Field. Greenville manager Kevin Boles will send right-hander Brock Huntzinger (5-7, 4.12 ERA) to the hill, as Delmarva counters with southpaw Chris Salberg (2-1, 3.09 ERA)
Tomorrow is also Dollar Drink Night, where fans can purchase 12-ounce Pepsi products at any of the concession stands for just a buck!
