John Ely Wins Pitcher of the Week
July 20, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
HOOVER, AL - John Ely flirted with perfection in his only start last week; he'll settle for the league's top pitching honor after being named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week Monday.
In his first start since the All-Star break, Ely retired the first 13 Mobile batters he faced before Chris Rahl reached on a throwing error with one out in the fifth inning. Rahl would come around to score later in the inning on the aid of another Barons error, but Ely kept the no-hitter in tact until Pedro Ciriaco broke up the bid with a single in the sixth inning.
Ely earned his fourth consecutive win in the start, improving his mark to 8-1. A Southern League All Star selection, he is now second in the league in wins, fourth in strikeouts (83) and eighth in ERA (3.31).
Ely is the second-consecutive Baron to win a player of the week honor, following CJ Retherford who won the hitter of the week award last week. He is the third Barons pitcher to win the honor, joining Aaron Poreda and Daniel Hudson. Stefan Gartrell has also won a hitter of the week honor in 2009 while Retherford won the honor earlier in the season as well.
The league also announced that Montgomery Biscuits outfielder Desmond Jennings has been named the Southern League Hitter of the Week. Jennings and the Biscuits will be at Regions Park Tuesday night for the start of a five-game series. Tuesday night will be Christmas in July at the ballpark and fans are encouraged to bring unopened toys that will be donated to Toys for Tots. Thursday night will be Parrot Head Night and fans are encouraged to wear Jimmy Buffet inspired apparel.
The Barons won the first-half South Division Title and will open the playoffs at Regions Park on Thursday, September 10 with game two taking place the following night on Friday, September 11. Game one will feature a Thirsty Thursday promotion while game two will feature post-game fireworks. Tickets to both games can be purchased online, over the phone or in-person at the Regions Park Box Office.
