Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - For the second straight ballgame, a rehabbing Aramis Ramirez delivered offensively but this time it was not enough as the Peoria Chiefs fell to the Beloit Snappers 4-1 on Independence Day in front of 6,599 fans at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs were their own worst enemy at the plate, grounding into a season-high five double plays, severing many potential rallies. Ramirez was 1-for-2 with a walk on the night and grounded into the first of the five Chiefs double plays while other Reed Johnson walked in his only plate appearance, pinch-hitting for Jose Made in the first. In the initial lineup both players were scheduled to play in the field, but the rain throughout the morning and early afternoon caused wet conditions at O'Brien Field which resulted in the change of plans. Johnson pinch-hit for Made in the first inning, walked, was forced out at second and lifted for David Macias in the top of the second. Both will continue their rehab with the Chiefs on Sunday afternoon. Beloit got to starter Aaron Shafer for four runs in the third. Stewart Munroe reached on an error by first baseman Rebel Ridling to start the frame. After a strikeout and back-to-back singles to load the bases, Ramon Santana drove in two with a solid single to left. The Snappers weren't done as Michael Harrington delivered a sacrifice fly plating Aaron Hicks and Santana scored on a Jon Waltenbury RBI single to make it 4-0 Beloit, with three of those runs unearned. Ramirez came through with the Chiefs only RBI in the game in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Flaherty and David Macias both singled to lead off the inning. The inning hit a snag however when the Chiefs wrapped into their fifth double play of the night, this one off the bat of Josh Harrison with Flaherty moving to third on the play. Ramirez came up and showed his strength, muscling a Michael Tarsi pitch into left field for a base-hit scoring Flaherty and cutting the Chiefs deficit to 4-1. The Chiefs had the opportunity to jump back into the contest in the bottom of the eighth. Kyler Burke and Ridling both came to the plate as the potential tying-run with the runners on first and second. However, Burke flew out to right field and Ridling fouled out to Nate Hanson to end the threat. Shafer lasted just four innings and gave up six hits and four runs but only one of which was earned. Chris Siegfried came in on relief and fired three flawless innings allowing just one hit. Ryan Buchter hurled the final two innings and allowed no runs on one hit. Tarsi limited his damage all night in a winning effort. Despite allowing eight hits and allowing the leadoff man to reach base in five of seven innings, the southpaw allowed just one run and struck out three to improve to 4-1 this season.
