Keys Start Second Half with Win

The Frederick Keys were just 2-25 when trailing after seven innings in the first half. They're now 1-0 when trailing after seven innings in the second half. Frederick 1B Robbie Widlansky hit a game-winning RBI single in the ninth on Thursday night to help the Keys beat the Winston-Salem Dash 5-4.

The Keys struggled to get the big hit through the early innings. They left seven runners on base through the first four frames. The Keys took the lead in the fourth. RF Billy Rowell and LF Tyler Henson hit back-to-back singles 2B Bobby Stevens then worked a walk to load the bases. CF Matt Angle grounded into a fielder's choice, knocking in Rowell, and giving Frederick a 1-0 advantage.

Winston-Salem RHP Johnnie Lowe would settle down after that. He allowed just the one run on five hits, while walking three and striking out nine in six innings of work.

Winston-Salem took the lead in the fifth. C Logan Johnson and RF Joe Persichina hit back-to-back singles to start off the inning. 2B Dale Mollenhauer drove them both in with a double, giving the Dash a 2-1 lead.

The Dash extended the advantage in the sixth. DH Seth Loman led off the inning with a double. CF Salvador Sanchez sacraficed him to third. Loman later scored on a passed ball, making it 3-1.

In the eighth, Winston-Salem got another insurance run. Lomah drilled his first Carolina League homerun, a solo shot to right, giving the Dash a 4-1 lead.

Frederick began their comeback in the eighth. With one man down, C Caleb Joseph drilled his fifth homerun of the season, a solo shot to left.

The Keys weren't done. The next batter, Rowell, singled to left field. Henson then drilled a triple down the line in left, scoring Rowell, and pulling Frederick to within one. Stevens then stepped up with a chance to tie the game. He lifted a soft liner to left. Winston-Salem LF Tyler Kuhn tried to make a sliding catch, but the ball went under his glove and rolled all the way to the wall. Henson scored easily. Stevens got to third with the second triple of the inning.

With the game still tied headed into the bottom of the ninth, Frederick started a rally. SS Pedro Florimon led things off with a walk. Florimon then swiped second, his third steal of the ball game. 3B Brandon Waring singled to left, advancing Florimon to third. Then, the reigning Carolina League Hitter of the Week, Widlansky, stepped in with a chance to win it. He hit a sharp single to center that scored Florimon and gave the Keys the come from behind win.

RHP Luis Lebron got the win after pitching a perfect ninth. He's now 2-2. RHP Santo Luis took the loss, dropping his record to 2-4.
