B-Mets Give Up Season-High 20 Hits in 12-2 Loss

Three Binghamton pitchers combined to give up a season-high 20 hits as Marcos Vechionacci hit two home runs for Trenton who won the first game of the Subway Series North 12-2 Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Josh Thole, Ruben Tejada, Emmanuel Garcia and Lucas Duda each had two hits apiece for the B-Mets.

Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Binghamton starter Eric Niesen, who was making his second AA start. Niesen walked the leadoff man Austin Krum on four pitches and Reggie Corona then doubled down the right field line. Eduardo Nunez followed up by driving in Krum with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Thunder extended their lead to 4-0 in the third when they strung together four straight hits with two outs.

With Niesen still in the game, Trenton added three more runs in the fourth. Vechionacci led off with a solo home run to left, his fifth of the season. With the bases loaded and one out, Hall hit a sacrifice fly to score Kyle Anson. Jesus Montero then drove in Krum from third with a single to make the score 7-0.

Three more runs scored for The Thunder in the fifth off reliever Julio De La Cruz. Vechionacci smacked an opposite field two-run home run for his second homer in as many at-bats to make it 9-0. An RBI single by Nunez made it 10-0.

In the next inning, an RBI groundout by Vechionacci made it 11-0. Trenton (34-32) scored one more in the seventh on an RBI double by Edwar Gonzalez.

Binghamton (26-40) scored their only two runs of the game in the ninth to avoid the shut out. After singles by Garcia and Jose Coronado, Jose Valdez threw two wild pitches. The second allowed Garcia to score from third. Thole then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Coronado.

Niesen was pinned with his second loss as he went four innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits.

Michael Dunn got the last out of the fifth inning to be the pitcher of record and take the win. He pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and struck out five B-Mets batters. Josh Schmidt went 4.2 innings in his third start of the year and did not allow a run on five hits and three walks.

Binghamton will play their fourth doubleheader of the season and third at NYSEG Stadium tomorrow night. The B-Mets are 4-2 in doubleheader games this season. The first pitch of game one is slated for 5:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 4:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
