Altoona Curve News Release

The Altoona Curve and the Connecticut Defenders (AA-San Francisco Giants) begin a three-game series tonight at Blair County Ballpark. This will be the second series between the teams with the Curve taking two out of three games at Connecticut last week.

FOR ALTOONA: RHP Yoslan Herrera will make his 13th appearance of the season and his eighth start. This will also be Herrera's fourth career start against the Connecticut Defenders. Last time out against Connecticut, Herrera tossed 5.0 innings allowing just one run on two hits for his fourth win of the season. Last season, Herrera turned in the best outing of his career against the Defenders, tossing a career-high 8.0 shutout innings, allowing just four hits. Herrera is 1-1 all time, suffering his lone loss in 2007, when he allowed two runs over 5.0 innings. Herrera, a native of Pinar del Rio, Cuba was signed by Pittsburgh as a non-drafted free agent in December 2006. Last season, Herrera made six starts for Pittsburgh, compiling a 1-1 record with a 9.82 ERA.

FOR CONNECTICUT: LHP Madison Bumgarner is on the hill for the Defenders. The southpaw comes into tonight's contest with an amazingly low 2.38 ERA. This will be his fifth start this season and sixth overall appearance. After beginning the year with four outstanding performances, Bumgarner has stumbled in his last two outings, one of which came against the Curve last week. In that game, Bumgarner allowed three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. It was the second consecutive outing where he allowed at least three runs, after previously allowing only two runs in his first four Double-A starts combined. Bumgarner was the first round pick (10th overall) of the Giants in 2007.

GORKYS GETTING GOING: In his last three games, Hernandez is 5-for-10 with two doubles, an RBI, and three runs scored.

POWERFUL PACHECO: After enjoying a perfect 4-for-4 plate performance against New Britain on 6/16 Curve OF Jonel Pacheco continued his offensive tear in Thursday's double-header. In the two games Pacheco went 2-for-5 and belted his seventh home run of the season. Pacheco has been the leader of the Curve offense all season, leading the team in home runs (7), hits (57), is tied for the team lead in RBIs (31) multi hit games (15) and extra base hits (15). Currently Pacheco is also riding his season-best hitting streak which currently sits at eight games (.379, 11x29).

DELANEY DELIVERS: OF/1B Jason Delaney has been a consistent threat in the Curve lineup. On Thursday night in game two of a twin-bill, Delaney hit his third home run of the season, with the two-run blast, Delaney is now tied for the team lead in RBIs with 31 and now leads the team in multi-RBI games with 10.

CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL...AND SO DOES THE WIN COLUMN: After hitting two home runs in game two of Thursday's doubleheader, the Curve are now 15-13 when hitting a round tripper as opposed to 8-30 when the ball doesn't leave the yard.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY!!!: The Altoona Curve have lost six games due to inclement weather which is most in the Eastern League. During the entire 2008 season, Altoona only lost four games due to rain. The rain has not only taken a toll on fans, but has also directly impacted play on the field for the Curve. Altoona is 0-6 in contests that follow a rainout.
