Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA, PA - The Curve battled back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game on a three run blast by Jose Tabata, but it was not enough as Altoona fell 9-5 to Connecticut in the opening game of a three game set at Blair County Ballpark.
Connecticut jumped out early with three runs in the third inning after Matt McBryde tripled home two runs and then scored on a fielder's choice. The Defenders extended their lead to four runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Eddy Martinez-Estreve.
The Curve would cut the deficit in half scoring on doubles by Jason Delaney and Jonel Pacheco. Those two have been on a tear of late, over their last six games they have combined for 16 hits, three home runs, and 10 RBIs. Pacheco also extended his season-high hitting streak to nine games.
After the Defenders added a run in the top of the fifth inning Tabata belted a Dan Griffin pitch deep to left for a three run homer to tie the game 5-5. The homer is Tabata's first of the season after sitting out 37 games with a hamstring injury.
Connecticut then pulled away with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Brock Bond extended his on base streak to 37 games with a 5-for-5 effort with three runs and an RBI triple for the Defenders.
Altoona (23-44) hopes to even the series Saturday night behind the arm of right hander Mike Crotta (3-3, 5.63). LHP Jesse English (4-3, 3.51) will get the start for Connecticut (38-29). First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark with radio coverage starting at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
