Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Drive headed to Lake Olmstead Stadium in search of ending a season-long losing streak. But even Casey Kelly, with his unblemished record, didn't have the answer as Greenville fell 4-3 to the Augusta GreenJackets.
After getting off to another hot start in which he allowed just one hit through the first three innings, Kelly hit a snag in the bottom of the fourth. The GreenJackets plated four runs, all coming with two outs.
Ben Woodbury got it all started with a one-out triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Three straight walks to Andy D'Alessio, Josh Mazzola, and Johnny Monell setup Wendell Fairley's RBI-single. A throwing error by Kelly on the play plated two more unearned runs.
The four-run fourth was all the GreenJackets needed, although the Drive attempted a comeback. Will Middlebrooks led off the fifth with a double, advanced to third on Pete Hissey's sacrifice bunt and scored on a groundout by David Mailman.
The Drive added another run in the seventh, pulling within a run. Mailman delivered a two-out, RBI-single to score Oscar Tejeda. After stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error, Mailman was left stranded 90 feet from home.
Daniel Runzler made sure that the Drive would not tie the game with a run in the eighth or ninth innings, recording all six outs by way of strikeout to earn his sixth save of the season.
Mailman and Federowicz paced the Greenville offense with two hits apiece. Federowicz gave Greenville an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third with his team-leading sixth round tripper of the season.
The Drive and GreenJackets continue their four-game series tomorrow evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. John Smoltz, beginning his rehab process and making his first start since undergoing surgery for a torn labrum on June 10th, 2008, will toe the rubber for Greenville. Augusta will counter with lefty Paul Oseguera.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Thursday, May 28th when they begin a seven-game homestand, starting with the Charleston RiverDogs. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
